Century Student to Serve as Student Representative-Elect for 2013-2014

Matthew Saxton, a ninth grade student at Century High School, will serve as the Student Representative-Elect to the Board of Education for the 2013-2014 school year. Saxton was elected to the position at the Carroll County Student Government Association’s General Assembly held in February.

According to Nora Murray, Coordinator of Youth Development and Service-Learning, “Matthew is motivated and well-prepared to serve in this position.” He will shadow Bryanne Flannery, the current Student Representative-Elect, for her term as Student Representative during the 2013-14 school year. Saxton will be seated as Student Representative in June 2014.

Century Students Win Prizes in AAA Traffic Safety Poster Contest

Two students from Century High School have received awards in the 2013 AAA Annual Traffic Safety Poster Contest for the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Karah Yates, a junior, won Honorable Mention, and Amy Elberfeld, a sophomore, won third prize in the high school age division.

The AAA Traffic Safety Poster Contest brings out the creativity in young people, while educating them and others about important traffic safety issues. This annual contest continues its primary mission of reducing traffic and pedestrian crashes, a leading cause of death and serious injury among children.      

Yates was presented with a certificate and an entertainment prize pack, while Amy received a $100 Visa gift card.

Basket Bingo – South Carroll High School

The South Carroll High School Band Boosters will host its annual Irish Basket Bingo on Saturday, March 16, at South Carroll High School. The entire community is invited to participate in this fun-filled event that supports the instrumental music program at the high school. Prizes will include Longaberger baskets filled with valuable donations from local businesses. There will also be door prizes, 50/50 raffles, and games for all ages.  Light dinner menu options will be available along with snacks and desserts. A big turnout is expected again this year and tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 410-635-2585. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and bingo starts at 6:30. Tickets will be available at the door.  

Model United Nations – Winters Mill High School

Winters Mill High School’s Model UN delegation participated in its first ever national event at the Johns Hopkins University Model United Nations Conference in Baltimore in February. Fifteen students from Winters Mill worked with over 1,700 students from all over the country and several international students to draft and approve resolutions on globally relevant topics. They represented the nations of Indonesia and Chile. Winters Mill is the first Model UN group from Carroll County and hopes to grow in numbers and include students from other Carroll high schools.

Nominations: Rita Board Dowd Award for Outstanding School Administrator

The Carroll County Public School System is seeking nominations for the Rita Board Dowd Award for Outstanding Carroll County School Administrator. This award was created in memory of Rita Board Dowd, who passed away in May 2009. 

Rita taught biology and science at North Carroll High School from 1997 to 2002. She was a member of the faculty that opened Winters Mill High School in 2002 and taught biology until her appointment as assistant principal in 2006. 

The award is given annually to two school administrators – one principal and one assistant principal (K-12), awarded independently.

Nominations must be received by Wednesday, March 27 at 4 p.m. The award will be presented during the Board of Education’s employee recognition ceremony on April 25, 2013.

East Middle School Teacher to Receive Human Relations Award

Darcel Harris, a reading teacher at East Middle School, has been selected to receive the 2013 Human Relations Award sponsored by the Carroll County Human Relations Commission.     

The award will be presented at the 21st Annual Human Relations Awards Dinner on Monday, March 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the New Windsor Conference Center.
