State Superintendent to Visit Century High School Wednesday

Officials will celebrate the high school's designation as a Blue Ribbon School.

Century High School, one of six schools in the state named a Maryland 2013 Blue Ribbon School, will receive a visit Wednesday from State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lillian Lowery.

Lowery will join students, staff, parents and members of the business community to celebrate the school’s special designation, the only school in the county to receive it.

There will be a Blue Ribbon Ceremony and pep rally from 9 to 9:55 a.m. Wednesday at Century High School, 355 Ronsdale Road, Sykesville, according to a district news release.

The Blue Ribbon Schools Program is a state and national program that recognizes and honors schools that exhibit high performance and/or significant improvement in reading and mathematics achievement as measured by Maryland’s assessments. Schools must meet rigorous standards developed by the Maryland State Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Education.

Maryland can select up to six schools for recognition, based on its school-age population. The Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools go on to compete for National Blue Ribbon Awards, which will be announced by the U.S. Department of Education in September.
