More than 10,000 power outages remain in Carroll County, including in two schools, but Superintendent Stephen Guthrie said this won't stop the first day of school Tuesday for the county's 26,500 new and returning students.

"It is my intent to open school tomorrow as scheduled. I am aware of challenging road conditions, but the county is responding aggressively to closures and we believe that they will have almost all road closures resolved by tomorrow," said Guthrie in a letter to parents Monday afternoon.

Century High School and Hampstead Elementary remain without power. Century administrators are working on backup generators.

Guthrie said a decision will be made regarding the two schools this afternoon if power is not restored.

"Overall, our facilities seem to have come through the hurricane in good shape. As you might expect, there are some leaks and debris throughout the system, but nothing we wouldn't expect from a storm of this magnitude," said Guthrie.
