High School Sports: Cavaliers Boys' Soccer Team Moves to State Semifinals

South Carroll edges Poolesville for regional title.

With a big save by goalie Brandon Quinn as time expired, South Carroll edged Poolesville 1-0 for the Class 2A West regional title Tuesday night at Liberty.

The Falcons had a corner kick and Quinn made the save at the goal line as the final whistle blew. Quinn made five saves in the second half.

"That was huge," said South Carroll coach Tim Novotny about the save.

The Cavaliers withstood second half pressure from the seventh seeded Falcons to make a first half goal stand up for the win. The goal came with 8:59 left in the first half on a great pass from Bobby Spears to Kendall Alstad, who out ran the Falcon defense for 40 yards to score.

"They played hard, they wanted it real bad and it showed. You have to give Poolesville credit. They wanted it too and they put the pressure on. They got nothing to lose.

Unfortunately we didn’t get a couple of opportunies in there and would have had an easier night. This is what our season was like all season," said Novotny as his team got ready for a team picture in the goal.

The top seeded Cavaliers beat Century and Middletown to advance the regional final, while Poolesville downed Oakdale, Williamsport and last year’s regional champion Liberty.

The Cavaliers will meet Loch Raven or defending state champion Marriotts Ridge this weekend at Bel Air High School to advance to the state final.

This is the third time South Carroll has played in the state tournament. They were semifinalist in 2008 and made the finals in 1988.
