Century Comes Up Short in State Finals

Marriotts Ridge topped the Knights 8-4 at UMBC Tuesday.

Century was denied a third consecutive state girls lacrosse championship as Marriotts Ridge stopped the Knights run 8-4.

The Mustangs were looking for revenge as the Knights knocked them out in the semifinals last year. Marriotts Ridge ended the season 17-1, while the Knights were 12-3. All three losses were to state finalists. The other two losses were to Winters Mill and Westminster, who play for titles today.

It was the second time this school year, that Marriotts Ridge downed a Carroll County team in the state finals at UMBC. In the fall, the Mustangs defeated Liberty for the boys soccer title.

The Knights made some mistakes which led to goals for the Mustangs and stopped shots for themselves.

"Dropped passes, we don’t normally drop, dropped balls we don’t normal drop. Unfortunately in a big game turnovers like that are a big deal. In the first half, three of our turnovers led to goals," said coach Becky Trumbo.

The Mustangs struck first as Nicole Grote scored the first of her three goals in the contest with 22:27 left in the first half. Abby Remenapp came back to tie the game at 1-1 for the Knights at the 18:29 mark.

About four minutes later the Mustangs took the lead back on a goal by Grote. Century’s Jill Remenapp scored two of her three goals in about three minutes to give the Knights their only lead of the game 3 to 2.

Tori Thompson and Laura Maskoll scored to give the Mustangs the lead going into halftime and for the rest of the game.

The Mustangs out scored Century 4 to 1 in the second half as they controlled the game in the second half.

"We have a really good offense and for us to be held to four goals, we had to play a very, very good team," said Trumbo.

Century was looking for their sixth state title in nine years.

It was second time the school year, Century was denied a state championship. They lost in field hockey in November.
