Century Finishes Second In County Mat Tournament

It was the best finish ever for the Knights who also collected two individual titles.

Century surprised the field to finish second in the Carroll County wrestling tournament Saturday night at Westminster.

It was the best finish ever for the Knights. Century also collected two individual titles as Kyle Tye and Brandon Antrobus won their weight classes.

"I want to be first frankly, but we took second. That is the first time we've taken second in a county tournament," said Century coach Dennis Frazier. "We did very well. I am happy with what we have done. Right now I believe we have 10 that will be going to the regional tournament. We might have one or two more and hopefully we do. We will find out. I am very happy with what we’ve done this year."

South Carroll collected four individuals titles in finishing third as a team and Liberty was fourth with one champion.

"I was pleased with the effort of our four guys that stepped up," said Cavalier coach Bryan Hamper. "We went four for four in the finals, so we ended on a great note. Obviously I would like to see more guys come through that semifinal round, but all in all we battled hard and got a lot of guys going on to the regions next week. We two got two more hard weeks of wrestling ahead of us. We are excited about were we are at We are peaking at the right time and have to continue to train hard."

The Cavaliers were perfect in the finals as they had four wrestlers on the mat and all four won. Chris Wampler and Willie Reiter continued their undefeated seasons with wins. Wampler won his third county title while moving his record to 27-0 and Reiter improves to 28-0. Also winning for South Carroll was John Gaunt and Billy Atwell.

"He is on his way to an undefeated record right now. He is making all the strides to be there at the end of the year. He fully believes he is training for a state championship and look forward in two weeks to being down there at Cole Field House and going after it," Hamper said about Wampler.

Dan Markosy claimed the Lions lone individual title at 135 pounds.

"I thought it was a pretty solid team effort. I was proud of how the kids performed today. It a great county tournament this year. Coach Lowe did a great job preparing Winters Mill and we will aspire to beat them next year," said Liberty coach Michael Flemming.

Century moves eight wrestlers on to the regional tournament, while the Cavaliers have seven and Liberty six. The top three finishers in each weight class moves on to the regional tourney, with the final number to be set Sunday.

South Carroll won the regular season county dual meet crown.
