Century Tops Competition at Linganore Volleyball Tournament

The girls' volleyball team brought home the big trophy from the Linganore Lancers High School Volleyball Tournament this weekend.

topped the competition this weekend, bringing home first place out of 10 area teams at the Linganore Lancers High School Volleyball Tournament.

The third annual tournament brings together teams from Frederick, Howard and Carroll Counties. This was the second year that Century has brought hope the first place trophy.

After coming out as the No. 1 seed in pool play, the Century Knights beat Catoctin High School in two straight sets of the semi-final match. The Knights then conquered Glenelg in the two-set finale to take the championship title.

Century's Morgan Thomas was selected to the All-Tournament team and Abby Thrift was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player.

“I’m extremely honored,” said Century volleyball player Abbey Thrift.  “I wouldn’t be the player I am today without the help of my coach, my team, and my younger sister, Hailey. I’m lucky enough to be able to spend my last season at Century being set by Hailey, she helps me improve every day.”

“Winning the Linganore tournament two years in a row is a huge accomplishment and I couldn’t be more proud of my team,” said Thrift. “We’re not just a team, we’re a family and we play like one.”

To get to the tournament game, Century won games against Oakdale, Glenelg, Walkersville and Frederick, only losing one game in pool play against Glenelg.

In the semi-finals, Century came in first place in Pool B, and played Catoctin, who placed second in Pool A. Century won both games, advancing to the tournament championship game.

Glenelg, who came in second in Pool B, played Marriotts Ridge, who placed first in Pool A, in the semi-finals. Glenelg won both games and advanced to play Century in the championship game.

Century topped Glenelg in both championship games to win the top honors in the tournament.

As of Sunday, Century remains in the top spot in the county, ranking No. 1 among the eight Carroll County teams. They are undefeated in the season so far with a record of 6-0.

The tournament teams were as follows:

  • Pool A: Catoctin, Linganore, Tuscarora, Marriotts Ridge, and Northeast. 
  • Pool B:  Walkersville, Frederick, Oakdale, Glenelg and Century.
