The American Medical Association has declared that cheerleading is a sport because of its “rigors and risks,” according to the Associated Press.

The nation’s large doctors’ association adopted that policy during its annual meeting in Chicago this week.

The AMA declared that “cheerleading is as rigorous as many other activities that high schools and the NCAA consider sports.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics approved a similar policy two years ago.

Whether cheerleading is a sport has been a contentious debate for years. One side says the cheerleaders train just as hard as any other athletes. Detractors say any competition that is judged isn't a sport. What do you think? Is cheerleading a sport? Let us know in the comment section below.

Cheerleading is a sport, and a very dangerous one, especially if you are a flyer. At one Baltimore Co. high school, winning awards was everything, and safety isn't even slightly regulated. Cheering isn't what it used to be, believe it!

Susan S. B. I have two granddaughters who are cheerleaders and I would like to see as much protection for them especially when you see your granddaughter being hoisted into the air and then dropped back down to the arms of her other teammates. It is exciting, but it is also scary to watch. We are proud of both of them.
