Football: Cavaliers to Open Playoffs

After a perfect regular season, South Carroll looks for perfection in the playoffs.

The Cavaliers are the third Carroll County team to post a 10-0 record and look to accomplish what the other two didn't: Win a state title.

The second season starts tonight against the third seeded Rockville Rams. The battle to move on gets under way at 7 p.m.

The second seeded Cavaliers are making their eighth appearance in the state playoffs. They were state runner up in 2005 and region runner up in 2009. The Rams are no stranger to the playoffs either. This is their fourth attempt. They were regional semifinalist last year, losing to Middletown.

There are four games to the state title and coach Steve Luette said, ''Lose your out, win you play again.''

Three of the goals South Carroll had going into the season was a winning season, win the county crown and make the playoffs. We were focused on the playoffs not being 10-0,''said Luette, who is in his second year as head coach.

The Cavaliers have scored on offense, defense and special teams during the regular season. They have a strong passing attack to go along with a running game. They have so many good hands they are using a tight end for the first time in years.

''We have been able to watch a few films on South Carroll. We hope to come up big on the defensive side of the ball," said Rockville coach Kevin Bernot.

The South Carroll defense will be tested by the 8-2 Rams. They registered four shutouts during the regular season. The Rams like to run the ball. Running back Crusoe Gongbay had over 2,000 rushing yards for the season. He has over 5,000 yards for his career.

''They are a grind it out team. They are a little bit like Winters Mill as they rely on one running back,'' said Luette.

South Carroll has depth this year, which can be seen at running back. They have two talented runners in Ben McCarty and Dan Mullen.

''We are deeper than I've seen South Carroll in a few years. An injury at this level can really hurt you,'' Luette said.

Watching the Cavaliers practice, Luette said ''They (South Carroll) enjoy playing football. The team has to win games not an individual.''
