High School Sports: Century Looks to Return to Hockey Title Game

Century, Liberty and South Carroll open the field hockey season.

Century looks for a return to state title game as the field hockey regular season gets underway Tuesday.

Terry Duryea begins her second season at the helm of the Knights. Last year they were 15-2 overall and 6-1 in the county.

Century hosts Middletown Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Returning for the Knights are forwards Casey McCorkell, Abby Remenapp and Kailey Wolfe, midfielders Alice Mercer and Allison Remenapp and defender Jess Curto. McCorkell, Curto and Mercer are seniors, while Abby and Allison Remenapp and Wolfe are juniors.

McCorkell had 10 goals and five assists during the season last year and Wolfe had nine goals and two assists.

Century posted 11 shutouts last year.

The Knights dropped the Class 2A final to Glenelg last fall at Washington College.

Brenda Strohmer takes the reins at Liberty for her first year Tuesday. The Lions were 5-8 overall and 2-5 in the county last year.

Liberty hosts Walkersville Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Returning for the Lions are goalie Melissa Bechtel, forward Elizabeth Bollard and Meghan Heffner on defense.

The Cavaliers are guided by Ashley Boumel, now in her fifth year as the coach.

South Carroll was 7-7 overall and 2-5 in the county last fall.

Top returners for the Cavaliers are forwards Katie Gillioce and Stephanie Howell and midfielder Erica DeColli.

South Carroll plays hosts to Tuscarora Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
