High School Sports: Girls Cross County Teams Ready to Run

Century girls look to repeat as state champions.

Century, Liberty and South Carroll are getting ready to attack the hills as the girls cross country sets to open Saturday.

The big change for the Knights this year is no Maura Linde who graduated this year. She was a three-time county champion and led Century to two Class 2A titles. She is running for Syracuse University this fall.

Chris Mead starts his first year as coach of the Knights.

Senior Katie Todd will be the leader of the Knights as she has three top 10 finishes in the county meet and was 10th in the state meet last fall. Also scoring points for Century this year will be senior Beth Lang, junior Morgan Fagnant and sophomore Erin Larkin.

Century opens the season Saturday at 9 a.m. at Mount St. Mary’s in the Peter Geraghty Invite.

Coach Dan Jones starts his 22nd year as coach of the Lions with an assist from first year coach Pete Lester. Lester is a former Lion runner.

The Lions were forth in the county last year.

Returning to lead Liberty is senior Casey Sullivan. She finished third in the county meet last year. Also running up front this year should be senior Kelly Thurmond, junior Maura Souders and sophomore Elena Roman.

Liberty opens the season on Sept. 10 in the Brunswick Invite.

Coaching the Cavaliers for the 21st year is Rob Pennington and Dan Reedy in his third year.

South Carroll was third in the county last year and eighth in the Class 2A state meet.

Samantha Bingaman will lead the Cavaliers again this season. She finished fourth in the county last year. Also returning are senior Jessica Craig and sophomore Tina Graf.

The Cavaliers will tie on their running shoes Tuesday in a meet at Westminster along with Century, Francis Scott Key and the home team.
