High School Sports: Knights Down Owls for County Hockey Title

Century scores 1-0 victory over county foe.

On a bright and windy morning, Century edged county foe Westminster 1-0 to win the county field hockey title.

The game was postponed from Thursday due to the recent rains and was played in front of a large crowd Saturday at Century.

Casey McCorkell scored the only goal of the game with 8:13 remaining on the clock. Abby Remenapp assisted on the play. The scoring play started on a short corner.

Remenapp also made a big play on defense with seconds left by blocking an Owl shot. Westminster had two short corners in the final minute of play before Century celebrated on the field.

"The final couple of minutes were a little anxious," said Century coach Terry Duryea.

"They had two corners at the end of the game, but our defense held it out. They did a good job, but we had to start switching field when they came out. We had to make sure we were switching fields because they were swarming the ball. Who ever had the ball on our team, they were swarming it. So we had to make sure we switched to hit to a different player out in open space and not send it right back where it came from."

Century only took four shots in the game compared to Westminster’s eight. Steffie Pfisterer made five saves for the victors, while her counterpart stopped three. The owls took five short corners while Century had four.

When asked about the Knights defense, Duryea said, "Alice Mercer was back there. She usually plays mid, but we moved her back on defense today and I think she did  a great job."

Asked when the last time the Knights beat Westminster, Duryea said, "This is the first since I have been at Century. This is my fourth year. The last six years, Century and Westminster have shared (the county title)."

The Knights have one game remaining in the county against North Carroll on Tuesday in Hampstead. Century is 6-0 in the county and 9-2 overall. Westminster also has one game remaining and falls to 5-1 in the county and 8-3 overall. Manchester Valley visit the Owls Tuesday at 4 p.m.
