High School Sports: Liberty Girls Earn First County Cross Country Title

Century takes second in both races.

broke three-year hold on the girls' cross country county title Friday at McDaniel College.

The title was the first for the Liberty girls in the meet. Century won the title in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

The meet was postponed from Thursday and moved from to McDaniel due to the weather.

Liberty was led by senior Casey Sullivan in third place followed by Sarah Rinehart, fifth;  Caroline McNary, 11th; Kelly Thurmond, 16th and Maura Souders in 19th. The top five finishers for each team are added together for the final score.

Liberty edged Century 54 to 59 for the crown. Rounding out the scoring was Winters Mill 64; South Carroll, 71; Westminster, 97; Manchester Valley, 163; Francis Scott Key, 190 and North Carroll, 218.

Pacing Century was Katie Todd in seventh. Also scoring for the Knights was Erin Larkin, eighth; Beth Lang, 10th; Morgan Fagnant, 12th and Lillie Cimmerer, 22nd.

South Carroll’s top finisher was Samantha Bingaman in sixth followed by freshman Olivia Lowman, ninth; Jessica Craig, 15th; Tina Graf, 20th and Jessica McWilliams, 21st.

The top finisher in the girls race for the second year in a row was Winters Mill’s Hannah Oneda, who finished two minutes ahead of teammate Nicole Rutherford.

Winters Mill has kept their streak in tact in the boys race as they won the title for the fourth year in a row.

Falcon junior Weston Carvalho won the race ahead of teammate Zach Hopkins.

Century was second in the race with 49 points to Winters Mill’s 25. Westminster was third with 76 points followed by Liberty with 86, North Carroll 130, South Carroll 134, Manchester Valley 210 and Francis Scott Key 232.

Patrick Anske led the Knights with a fourth place finish followed by teammates John Mead, eighth; Kevin Slujtner, 11th; Joshua Turskey, 12th and Owen Thomas in 14th.

Senior Greg Rinehart topped Liberty in fifth place followed by Tom Luebke, 15th; Kyle Holmes, 16th; Tyler Pollard, 20th and Jake Spivey, 30th.

Ryan Smith paced South Carroll in 19th with fellow Cavaliers scoring Sam Evans, 24th; Nick Chaconas, 28th; Josh Lockwood, 29th and Justin Buck, 34th.

The county teams take part in regional meets next Thursday with Century, Liberty and South Carroll running at Middletown at 3 p.m.
