Six Mount Airy Youth Triathletes Place at Regional Championships

More than 200 youth triathletes from across the state of Maryland as well as from Pennsylvania and Virginia recently competed at the Nottingham Kids Triathlon, named the USA Triathlon Mid-Atlantic Youth Regional Championship.

With four varying race distances depending upon age, the youth triathletes swam, biked and ran their way through the Mount Airy, Md., community of Nottingham. Six Mount Airy youth triathletes were awarded for their top performances:

Female 7-8: Lucy Curtis-Cherry, 3rd Place
Male 7-8: Andrew Dolecki, 3rd Place
Female 9-10: Hailey Snider, 2nd Place
Male 9-10: Benjamin Lausch, 2nd Place
Female 11-12: Anna Lausch, 2nd Place
Female 11-12: Megan O’Neill, 3rd Place

The Nottingham Kids Triathlon is presented by the Mini Cow Tri Club, the first youth focused USA Triathlon Club in Maryland, encouraging healthy lifestyle choices through multisport with an emphasis on fun. The club had 19 youth triathletes compete at the championship with six of them earning podium positions according to coach and club co-founder Christy Lausch.

Through a limited number of charity registration spots, an additional contribution by the Mini Cow Tri Club, and a matching contribution, $1,400 was donated to the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation after the race.

The Foundation, which produces the TRI-TO "WIN-THE-FIGHT" Frederick Kids Triathlon, is one of four founding partners along with the Mini Cow Tri Club of the Maryland Youth Triathlon Series which was formed, in part, to drive awareness of melanoma skin cancer among adolescents and young adults and
support the efforts of the Foundation Lausch said. The Foundation is instrumental as “the voice for melanoma prevention, detection, care and cure.”
