Wrestling: South Carroll and Liberty Capture Individual State Titles

South Carroll's Chris Wampler and Liberty's Dan Markosy bring home individual titles.

South Carroll’s Chris Wampler and Liberty’s Dan Markosy brought home state titles from the state Class 2A/1A wrestling tournament Saturday night at the University of Maryland Cole Field House. 

Both are seniors and capped successful years with the wins. Wampler had a 33-1 record for the year. He gained revenge for his only loss by defeating North Carroll’s Micah Haas 6-3 for the 125 pound title.

Markosy also was up against a familiar foe as he took on Keith Steine for the 135 title. Markosy won the hard fought match, 10 to compile a 33-2 record for the season.

South Carroll ended the meet in fifth place, while Liberty came in at 18. Century was in 23rd place.

South Carroll’s Willie Reiter was third at 160. A junior, he had a 35-2 mark for the season.

Teammate Derek Fung was fourth at 171 pounds. The senior had a 30-7 record.

Century’s juniors Brandon Antrobus and Kent Kruger came home in sixth place in their weight classes. Antrobus at 215 had a 32-8 record and Kruger at 285 was 30-11.

Winters Mill captures the county’s third team title by coming out ahead of Owings Mill. The Falcons had one champion in Justin Kozera at 285. He completed the season undefeated at 40-0. Teammates Wes Cook and Steine were both runners-up.

Carroll County has won an individual title for 29 straight years and 36 out of 38 years. Westminster won the county’s only other team state crowns in 1975 and 1986.
