Summer Events at Carroll County Wineries and Breweries

A roundup of summer events coming up at local Carroll County wineries and breweries.

Love wine?  Enjoy trying local brews? Looking for some fun activities for this summer? Below is a list of upcoming Summer Events at local wineries and breweries in Carroll County.

Wineries:

Detour Vineyard & Winery, 7933 Forest and Stream Club Road, Detour

The Tamminga family aims to use ‘old world techniques’ such as slow fermentation and all-natural ingredients.

Owner Dann Tamminga explains that most of their wine is fairly close in popularity, but right now their best-selling wine is Alpine Frost, a sweeter wine.

“If one likes drier wines, they would like either our Gewurztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, House White, or our newest release Traminette.” Tamminga said.  “Going sweeter would be Mornin' Deux, Alpine Frost and our ever popular Meadow Breeze; which is a lightly sweet blush with a refreshingly tart finish.”  

Upcoming Festivals: All festivals feature “top notch food vendors” as well as “talented craft vendors.  Tickets: $20 each day. 

  • Weekend Jazz Festival – This event will headline many big names in the Jazz industry. Aug. 31- Sept. 1 
  • Classic Rock & Roll Festival – Rock and roll music both days and the addition of a classic car show on Sunday. Sept. 28 – 29 

Year-round Sunday Concert Series: 2-5 p.m. Indoor concert, no reservations required, no cover charge. Patrons are invited to bring their lunch and enjoy Detour wine during the concert.

Toast the Weekend/Saturdays on the Patio: The last Friday of each month from 6-8 p.m. and the second Saturday of the month from 5-7 p.m. patrons are invited to bring a dinner and enjoy Detour wine and live music in the tasting pavilion.  This event is free of charge.

Serpent Ridge Vineyard, 2962 Nicodemus Rd, Westminster, 410-848-6511 

Owned by Greg and Karen Lambrecht, Serpent Ridge consists of two acres of grapes and uses a hands-on wine making approach.  “Each vintage is made in small lots and aged in stainless steel or new age oak.”

Karen Lambrecht explains that their Basilisk (Cabernet blend) wine is currently their best-selling wine. 

“Best wines for summer would be our Cabernet Franc Rose (just released this month), Albarino, and Seyval Blanc. Of course, for the red drinkers--Basilisk is still a great option.” Lambrecht said.

  • Yoga and WineThurs., July 18, 6:30-8:30 p.m., $30. The Yoga House will be leading a 60 minute yoga practice at Serpent Ridge Vineyard. Cost includes yoga class, wine tasting and a souvenir wine glass. Preregistration is required. Click here to reserve a spot.
  • Summer Vineyard Tour & Dinner Sunday, Aug. 4, 4:00 p.m., $20 per person. The evening starts off with a Serpent Ridge wine tour, followed by a wine tasting and food pairing.  If you finish the evening off with dinner at Brick Ridge, your fee is deducted from your dinner.
  • First Friday Events:  Live music, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m., while sitting next to the vineyard.  Participants are welcome to bring a picnic dinner and enjoy Serpent Ridge wine$10 parking fee. Check out Albarino Aug. 2 and 6.

Anniversary Dinners in July: All dinners will begin promptly at 3pm with Appetizers of the Day, accompanied by Classic Method Sparkling Wines. Next will be a second course at seating, followed by the Entree. A cheese course consisting of hand crafted Artisanal cheeses will follow. Dinner will conclude with dessert.

Dog Days: Patrons are invited to bring their dogs and a picnic lunch and enjoy a cool glass of summer wine on the deck. 

Old Westminster Winery, 1550 Old Westminster Road, Westminster, 443-536-6436

Owned and operated by the Baker family, the winery is dedicated to offering a “unique wine-centered experience”.

  • Saturday, July 20 – Release of the 2012 Sauvignon Blanc.
  • Sunday, July 21 - The beginning of Sunday Winery Openings, 12 – 5 p.m.  On this and every following Sunday wine lovers are invited to relax on the patio or spread a blanket in the vineyard. Vineyard and winery tours are offered each Sunday at 1 p.m. Participate in an informative discussion about wine making philosophy while walking through the vineyard and touring the winery.  
  • Friday, July 26 – Fondue Friday - 6 – 10 p.m., Old Westminster Winery is hosting an evening under the stars.  The evening’s offerings include warm, gourmet chocolate fondue paired with freshly picked, local fruits from Baugher’s Orchard in Westminster and live music by Jesse Cook.
  • Friday, Aug. 9 - Yoga at Sunset, 6-9 p.m., Yoga lovers are invited to come enjoy an hour long session of yoga taught by Tiffany Schaal as the sun slowly sets across the vineyard. Following the session, participants will be able to relax and experience a full tasting of Old Westminster's finest wines. 
  • Thursday, Aug. 22 -   First annual Harvest Wine Dinner, 7 – 9 p.m. This dinner celebrates the beginning of Harvest season with a five course meal prepared by Chef Matthew Hundertmark, paired with Old Westminster's wines.

Galloping Goose Vineyards, 4326 Maple Grove Road, Hampstead, 410-374-6596

Owned and operated by Ed and Diane Hale and their two sons Jason and John, Galloping Goose opened the doors of its vineyard June 25, 2010. 

Open Saturdays from 12-5 p.m. and other times by appointment.

Breweries:

Ruhlman Brewery LLC - "OUR ALES", 2300 Harvey Gummel Rd, Hampstead, 410-259-4166

Built on a 36 acre farm, Ruhlman Brewery LLC prides itself on being a family-friendly brewery complete with picnic areas.  The outdoor Beer Garden & Concert Venue is available to rent for Corporate Events, Weddings, Receptions, Private Parties and more.

Owner Matt Ruhlman feels like Rebel Rye is a great summer beer.

“Our best-selling beers have been milk stout, red ale, and Black Knight.  The Black Knight is being released in 12oz. bottles in about 2 weeks; it has only been on draft.” Ruhlman said, “We just released Amber Ale, Le Wac, and Rebel Rye in the last month.”

Saturday Concerts - Live Music, every Saturday, 7 – 10 p.m., $5 cover and kids are free.  Weekly events include a food truck, horse shoes, fishing, corn hole, glow disc golf and more.

Happy Hour Disc Golf – Every Friday, June 28 – Aug. 30 PDGA sanctioned events, Registration: 5-5:45 p.m., Tee time: 6 p.m., $5 entry fee.

DOG Brewing Company, 1203 New Windsor Rd, Westminster, 410-848-3993  

Founded in 2005 DOG brewing Company produces fresh local beers for Pub Dog Pizza and Drafthouse located in Baltimore and Columbia.  DOG beers can be purchased through liquor stores throughout Central Maryland.

  • Call for tours and tastings.
  • DOG Brewing Company will be participating in the BAM Fall Event in Baltimore.  Information about this event will be updated on their website as it gets closer.
