Sykesville Main Street Needs Your Help to Add More 'Green'

Planting Day for set for Saturday, March 31; Volunteers needed to plant trees and flowers.

Two new parking lots were built in downtown Sykesville last year--now they need a little help from volunteers to make them beautiful.

A Planting Day will be held Saturday, March 31 along Sykesville Main Street, to plant trees and flowers in area and in the new parking islands.

Everyone is welcome to pitch in and lend a hand. "We can use as many volunteers as can come out," says Ivy Wells, Main Street Manager. "All ages, families, scout troups--all are welcome!"

Wells says the project is also "great for students who need community service hours." Students should bring their community service form and Wells or other city staffers on hand will sign it. They will also have blank forms on hand for students needing one.

A variety of trees and flowers will be planted. The project will start at 1 p.m., and continue for for "as long as it takes," says Wells.

The greenery is a gift to the Main Street Design Committee, donated by the Sykesville/South Carroll Rotary Club.

Wells says the plantings were donated in honor of the late Harry W. Haight, the father of Brian Haight of Haight Funeral Home. She adds that a plague honoring Haight is also being planned to later be mounted in the area.

Though walk-in planting volunteers are welcome, Wells says it's best to schedule a planting time in advance, if possible. Contact her by sending an email to Ivy@sykesville.net, or calling 410-795-8959.
