Legislature Approves Tax Hike, Pension Shift

Governor calls budget package "good for all Marylanders." Republicans say burden to local governments may force county governments to increase taxes.

The Maryland House of Delegates gave final approval Wednesday to a package of three bills that increases taxes on some state residents, shifts part of teacher pensions to local governments and undoes the so-called "doomsday budget." The votes Wednesday afternoon capped the three-day special session called by Gov. Martin O'Malley in order to override more than $500 million in cuts made in a budget passed in early April. The Senate approved the same three bills Tuesday. As part of the package, legislators approved by a vote of 86-51 what amounts to a 50-50 split of teacher pension costs with local governments. The split will be phased in over the next four years beginning July 1 with the new budget year. That bill also includes a doubling of…

And why would a cop, whether CCSO or Hampstread PD, call Daggett from a murder scene if not to ask questions? Did they call and chat about the weather? This stuff is amazing.   more ›

Electrical Fire Causes $200,000 in Damages

Fire officials believe an exterior electrical unit caught fire and ignited the Sykesville home's attic.

An electrical fire caused more than $200,000 in damages to a Sykesville home early Tuesday, and the way it started helped save the lives of the three people inside, said Bill Rehkopf, public information officer for the Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department. The incident was reported at a home in the 7600 block of Maple Ave. at 2:04 a.m., he said. The fire was through the roof when responders arrived, and units from Sykesville, Gamber, Winfield and Howard County controlled it by 2:33 a.m., he said. Two adults and an adolescent girl escaped from the home safely after an exterior electrical connection caught fire and traveled through the gutter and into the home's attic, Rehkopf said. Friends, Parishioners Say Pastor's Shooting 'Hitting Us Hard'

Friends of Mary-Marguerite Kohn are praying for her survival.

Even with hope, dealing with the shooting of Mary-Marguerite Kohn was filled with grief, friends and Episcopal church members said. “She brought so much joy and life to our department … it’s hard to see someone with such gifts to be taken away so needlessly,” said Sharon Cheston, who was Kohn’s advisor at Loyola University. Kohn received a Ph.D. in pastoral counseling from Loyola in 2009. Cheston said Kohn’s family is gathering and that Kohn has been “annointed,” an Episcopalian ritual similar to Catholicism’s “last rites,” performed when a person is dying, or gravely ill, according to About.com, a New York Times Company website. “It's hard even if you have a lot of support and a lot of love and a lot of faith,” Cheston said. “It's still …
