Legislature Approves Tax Hike, Pension Shift

Governor calls budget package "good for all Marylanders." Republicans say burden to local governments may force county governments to increase taxes.

The Maryland House of Delegates gave final approval Wednesday to a package of three bills that increases taxes on some state residents, shifts part of teacher pensions to local governments and undoes the so-called "doomsday budget." The votes Wednesday afternoon capped the three-day special session called by Gov. Martin O'Malley in order to override more than $500 million in cuts made in a budget passed in early April. The Senate approved the same three bills Tuesday. As part of the package, legislators approved by a vote of 86-51 what amounts to a 50-50 split of teacher pension costs with local governments. The split will be phased in over the next four years beginning July 1 with the new budget year. That bill also includes a doubling of…

He had the same teacher my son had when he went through the two's program years ago- Mrs. Connell- who to this day I talk about her with other parents whose kids went through the two …   more ›

Public Schools Extracurricular Activity Eligibility Requirements Change

Carroll County public school students will have to do a little better in order to be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities.

Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, there will be a change in the academic eligibility requirements for students participating in extracurricular activities in Carroll County Public Schools. During the 2011 session of the Maryland State Legislature, House Bill 364 - Student Participation in High School Sports - Minimum Academic Requirements - Proposed Standards was enacted. This law requires the State Board of Education to recommend minimum academic eligibility standards for students participating in interscholastic athletics. To facilitate that process, the Maryland State Department of Education established an advisory committee to review current local and other state practices and provide the State Board of Education with suggested…

Next year school lunches could get a little more expensive.

The Board of Education of Carroll County is seeking feedback on a proposal to increase the price of school meals for the 2012-2013 school year. According to a news release, a price increase is needed to bring the school system into compliance with recent National School Lunch regulations. These regulations require that paid lunch prices gradually increase to an amount equal to or greater than the rate of federal reimbursement received by the school district for meals served to students eligible for free meals.
