With Pimlico triumph, I'll Have Another keeps Triple Crown dream alive.
I’ll Have Another proved the skeptics wrong by winning the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday in exactly the same way he won the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago. The Kentucky-bred chestnut colt chased down pre-race favorite Bodemeister in the stretch crossing the finish line first by a neck. The Knights and Cavaliers advanced in lacrosse, while Century and South Carroll earned a spot in the semifinals in baseball.
South Carroll edged Century 1-0 in the Class 2A West softball quarterfinal Wednesday, securing a spot in the regional semifinals. The game included a 55-minute pitching duel, with South Carroll collecting five hits in the contest, three of which came from Summer Crosswhite. Century had one hit, a bunt by Amanda Pruitt. It was the third time the two teams have squared off. "All three games been a pitching duel," South Carroll coach Matt Cannistraci said. "Liberty is going to be a pitching duel again tomorrow. The Liberty High Lions ran away with Carroll County Indoor Track & Field Championships Thursday. Century High boys placed second.
The Liberty High girls won their second straight Carroll County Indoor Track & Field championship on Thursday afternoon at Century High. The Lions won in convincing fashion, with a total of 168.50 points. Second place went to Francis Scott Key with 93, and third went to Century with 72. The rest of the scores are: Manchester Valley, 68, Westminster, 55, North Carroll, 40, South Carroll, 32.50, and Winters Mill with 29. The Westminster boys claimed their first title since 2006 when they were co-champions with Francis Scott Key. The Owls had 143 points to Century’s 113.66 followed by Winters Mill 83, Francis Scott Key 78, Liberty 56, North Carroll 46.33, South Carroll 21 and Manchester Valley with 17. The Pimlico Race Course and the Maryland affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure have made Kathleen Kelly the official Maryland Jockey Club ambassador for this year's race.
An Eldersburg mother of two will represent more than her hometown at the 137th Preakness Stakes events in Baltimore next week. Kathleen Kelly has been named Ms. Preakness Pink Warrior by Pimlico Race Course and the Maryland affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which means she will appear at several race-related activities throughout the week. Her itinerary includes "Black-Eyed Susan Day" on Friday, May 18, the post position draw on Wednesday, the Alibi Breakfast on Thursday, and on the storied cupola for the presentation of the Woodlawn Vase following the middle jewel of racing’s Triple Crown itself on Saturday, May 19.
