Harlem Wizards Take on Local Team at McDaniel College Feb. 2

The fundraiser will raise money for a a local boy who needs an assistance dog.

The Harlem Wizards will be coming to Westminster on Feb. 2 to dribble, shoot and dunk their way past a team of local players -- all to raise money for an assistance dog for a local boy. Wendy Boag said she invited the Harlem Wizards to come play a game at McDaniel College as a way to raise money for her son's assistance dog. "They are like the 'Harlem Globetrotters,' but on more of a community-type scale," Boag said. "They do all of the same types of tricks as the Globe Trotters, but are more interactive with the kids in the audience, like inviting them all onto the court for half time fun." High School Basketball: Century Tops Liberty in Girls Basketball

The Knights advance in regional play.

Century High School advanced in regional play with a 53-24 victory over rival Liberty High School Monday night. The top seeded Knights will host either Walkersville or Middletown Wednesday night in Class 2A West region action. South Carroll High School ended their season Monday night with a 49-43 defeat to Catoctin. The Cavaliers had a 14-10 record for the season. "We had a very good night defensively. Alice (Mercer), Tess Nichols, Angela (Flister) Jamie (Clark) I thought team-wise we did a really good job taking away their inside game," said Century coach Joel Beard.  "Brooke Snyder off the bench, Vicky Perrone had two big shots for us, which really helped us. The basketball regional play runs this week, while the wrestlers head to College Park on Friday and Saturday for the state meet. Century High School hosts rival Liberty High School tonight in girls action of Class 2A West region. South Carroll High School heads to Catoctin last this evening. On Tuesday, Century and South Carroll host games in the boys Class 2A West region. The Knights face off against Frederick County’s Walkersville while the Cavaliers tip off against county foe Winters Mill. The winners advance in the region while the season is over for the losers. High School Basketball: Liberty Girls Advance in Regional Playoffs

The Liberty boys dropped their first round game Friday night.

The Liberty High School girls opened play in Class 2A West play with a 55-29 win over Francis Scott Key while the Lion boys fell to Middletown 65-50. The South Carroll High School girls were also in action Friday night as they downed Winters Mill 57-37 in regional action. The Cavaliers travel to Thurmont Monday night to face third seeded Catoctin at 7 p.m. The girls advance to play rival Century Monday night at 7 p.m. The Lions are the eighth seed in the region, while the Knights received a first round bye as the top seed. Century downed the Lions twice during the regular season. The girls game was close for the first four minutes as Liberty’s Haley Price sunk two free throws with 4:44 left in the first quarter to tie the game at 6-6. The …

Carroll County Winter Sports Standings: Feb. 20

State track and regional basketball games and wrestling matches take place this week.

Winter high school sports have reached the second season - state playoffs. The state indoor track meet takes place today in Prince George’s County at the sports complex. Basketball and wrestling have regional playoffs start this week. Century, Liberty and South Carroll mat squads head to Mountain Ridge High School Friday and Saturday for the Class 1A/2A regional meet. Century grabbed the top spot in the Class 2A West girls region. The Knights have a bye and will play the winner of Liberty and Francis Scott Key on Feb. 27. The Lions are the eighth seed in the region and the Eagles are the ninth. Knights and Cavaliers Split Basketball Doubleheader

The Cavalier boys wrap up their second straight county title.

The South Carroll boys wrapped up their second straight county title Friday night with a 57-31 victory over Century in front of a large Glod Rush crowd. The game was part of a boys/girls doubleheader which saw the Century girls win the nightcap 48-29. The Cavaliers jumped out in the boys game to a quick 7-1 lead in the first period and led 12-8 at the end of the period. They led at halftime 24-16. South Carroll came out in the third quarter and put the game away as they out scored the visitors 16-6. "We didn’t hit the shots tonight," said Century coach George Wunder. "I thought we got a lot of good looks early. We just didn’t knock them down. Got to give credit to their defense. High School Sports Winter Standings and Scores

Over the weekend the Liberty High School girls indoor track team captured the 2A West title. The Lions will attempt to win the state 2A title on Feb. 20-21 after coming up short by one point to Century last year. Friday is circled this week on the local sports calendar as Century travels to South Carroll for a boys/girls doubleheader. The boys take the court first at 5:30 followed by the girls at 7 p.m. The boys should be meeting for the county crown as the Cavaliers are 11-1 and looking for a second straight title. Century is 10-2 in the county after dropping a game to Westminster last week. The Knights host Francis Scott Key Tuesday and the Cavaliers are home to North Carroll. The Century girls are 11-1 and hold a two-game lead over the …

Video: Century Loses to Westminster at the Buzzer

The Westminster Owls boys basketball team beat the Century Knights 62-59 Friday night.

Westminster High School senior Zach Dudley threw up a long shot as the buzzer sounded in Friday night's showdown against Century. The team and crowd went wild as the ball dropped through the net. Dudley's shot broke the 59-59 tie to win the game for the Owls. The Knights dominated the first half and went into half time with a 30-24 lead. In the second half the teams stayed within a few points of eachother. At the end of the third quarter the Owls led 43-42. The Knights record is 15-3, (10-2 in the county) and the Owls stand at 15-4 (9-3 in the county). Not saying the non-call would have helped Century win (you don't shoot free throws on a player control foul anyway), the buzzer-beater shot was incredible and the Owls deserved the win. Just saying that the officials should have made that call and Century would have had the ball with a throw-in rather than trying to race up court and have the ball stolen.
