High School Basketball: Century Captures Battle of Eldersburg

The Century Knights won the boys/girls doubleheader Tuesday night.

Century stole a boys/girls basketball doubleheader from rival Liberty Tuesday night. In the opening contest, the Knights boys' team ran away with an 83-44 victory, while in the nightcap Century took the girls' game 52-45. The Knights also swept the doubleheader early in January at Liberty. In the boys' game, Century wasted little time in setting the tempo. Liberty’s Chad Barcikowski hit the first basket of the game, but Century scored the next 14 points on way to a 21-11 lead at the end of the first eight minutes of play. Century hit eight three-pointers in the first half and led 50-24 at halftime. Century’s Evan Fritsche had 12 points in the first half and teammate Mitch Sleight added 10. High School Basketball: Cavaliers and Knights Split Doubleheader

South Carroll wins boys game while Century topped the girls contest.

South Carroll and Century met for a boys/girls doubleheader Friday with all four teams tied for first place in the county. When the evening was over, two of the teams were in first. The girls took the court first and Century edged the Cavaliers 40-37. The second game saw South Carroll come out on top 52-30. The Century girls improve to 6-1 in the county and 10-1 overall. South Carroll is now 5-2 and 8-4 overall. On the boys side, South Carroll is 7-0 in the county and 12-2 overall. The loss was the first one for the season for Century, who are 6-1 in the county and 10-1 overall. Neither side could pull away in the girls game. High School Basketball: Lions and Cavaliers Split Doubleheader

The Lions gain their first girl's basketball win of the season.

The Liberty Lion girls captured their first win of the season in front of a home crowd over South Carroll 60-58 in overtime. The girls were the first game of a doubleheader which saw South Carroll win the boys game 67-47. Between the games, Liberty honored former coach Steve Johnson. His family was on hand to receive a famed Liberty jersey and heard that new scoreboards next year in the gym will be in honor of him. Johnson was a graduate of South Carroll and coached the Lions for 10 years. He passed away in October. The girls basketball game went into overtime when Liberty’s Bianca Christian hit a basket with six seconds left in the fourth quarter. High School Boys Basketball: Cavaliers Soar Over Falcons

South Carroll boys win 66-49.

South Carroll behind junior Gavin McTavish pounded visiting Winters Mill 66-49 in boys basketball Tuesday evening. McTavish poured in 25 points to lead the Cavalier attack. Junior guard John Quinn was in double figures with 10 points. Teammates Tyler Alcid and Ryan Tate each had nine points each. Also scoring for victors was Dan Mullen with six, Ethan McBryde had four and Matthew Dee has two. South Carroll jumped out to a seven point lead 14-7 with 3:15 left in the first quarter. Winters Mill chipped away to take a 18-16 lead on a three-pointer by Joe Sands with 1:06 left. High School Basketball: Liberty Boys Drop Home Opener to Tuscarora

Lions fall to 0-2 in young boys basketball season.

Visiting Tuscarora from Frederick County topped the Liberty boys in their basketball home opener Wednesday night 77-39. The Titans put the game away in the first eight minutes of the game as they jumped out to a 28-8 lead. Tuscarora’s Lamal Washington scored the first 11 points of the game and had 14 total points in the first quarter. Tuscarora was up 13-0 before Shane Sweeney got the home team on the scoreboard at the 5:02 mark. "We dug a hole and just couldn’t get out of it. I told them it’s December, it’s a long season. We got nine new guys that didn’t play varsity before. It’s just a matter of getting our game together," said Liberty coach Jay Seaborg. The visitors were up 48-20 at halftime. High School Basketball: Century Girls Open Hoop Season With Win

Century topped Frederick 51-49 Monday night.

Cassidy Jones and Jamie Clark hit free throws in the final 25 seconds to lead Century to a 51-49 victory over the defending Class 3A champion Frederick Cadets Monday evening. "We played tough. I thought some our foul shots down toward the end were really crucial, Jamie Clark and Cassidy," said Century coach Joel Beard.  In other girls action Monday evening South Carroll downed Linganore 55-39 and Oakdale defeated Liberty 54-44. In boys basketball, Century opened the season with a 71-41 win over Walkersville. Clark toed the foul line for two shots with 25 seconds remaining and the Cadets up 48-47. She hit both and 15 seconds later Jones went to the line for two more foul shoots. She sunk both to give the home Knights a 51-48 lead. Frederick…
