At the end of his term in 2014, Sheriff Ken Tregoning will have 51 years of public service under his belt.
Sheriff Ken Tregoning announced Thursday afternoon he will not seek re-election in 2014. Tregoning is the 57th sheriff to serve the citizens of Carroll County, since its charter in 1837, and he is completing his fourth term (total of 16 years) in office. "I am extremely grateful to the citizens of Carroll County for allowing me to serve them as sheriff," Tregoning said in a statement. "I strongly believe that local protection for county citizens and law enforcement services are best provided by the Office of Sheriff." A trip to the mailbox ended with a call to the bomb squad for a Taneytown man Wednesday.
A joint investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal Bomb Squad and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office is currently underway to determine who placed a pipe bomb inside a mailbox in Taneytown Wednesday, according to a release from the Fire Marshal. The owner of the property in the 3800 block of McMullen Rd., James A. Sandel, found the device at about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday when checking his mail, the Fire Marshal said. Deciding the device was a threat, sheriff's deputies notified the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Bomb technicians rendered the device safe at the scene without injury or property damage, according to the Fire Marshal. There are no suspects at this time, according to police.
Approximately $12,000 worth of diesel fuel was stolen from the Finkburg-based C.J. Miller asphalt manufacturing facility Monday night, according to the Sheriff's Department. Col. Phil Kasten of the Carroll County Sheriff's Department said that unknown suspects removed approximately 3,000 gallons of fuel from two tanks. Billy Miller, vice president at C.J. Miller, Inc., said that the company's video surveillance system caught the large white truck on camera but the license plate is not visible. Miller said the suspects took pins out of the gate at the entrance of the facility and removed the gate. He said they entered the facility around 10:30 p.m. and didn't leave until 11:30 p.m. Kasten said the Sheriff's Office is investigating. He …

Knorr Brake Corporation showed off its new building on Arthur Peck Drive in Westminster on Thursday with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Knorr Brake Corporation is a manufacturer of braking, door, and HVAC systems for the mass transit rail industry. Knorr's new $28 million, 235,000-square-foot facility across from the Carroll County Regional Airport is an upgrade from its previous location on Baltimore Blvd. Knorr's previous building was purchased by Land Sea Air, a newly formed manufacturing company for $3.5 million.

The board of Carroll County Commissioners will adopt its fiscal year 2014 budget on May 28.
Carroll County citizens asked the commissioners to reconsider funding for education and nonprofits in the fiscal year 2014 county budget at a public hearing Monday night. A majority of the 37 speakers asked the commissioners to flat fund county-supported nonprofits and/or to fund the public schools at the amount requested by the board of education. In the proposed budget, seven nonprofits will see a 3 percent reduction in funding in fiscal year 2014 and a 5 percent reduction in coming years. Representatives spoke on behalf of Human Service Programs, the Youth Service Bureau, the Circle of Caring and other nonprofits asking the commissioners to flat fund all county-supported nonprofits. Commissioners say they can fund maintenance and upgrade to facilities without charging citizens a tax.
In 2012 the Legislature adopted legislation requiring eight counties and Baltimore City to impose a storm water management fee, more popularly known as the “rain tax,” but Carroll County's commissioners say Carroll doesn't need it. In 2013, the commissioners asked the Carroll County delegation to file legislation exempting Carroll from the tax requirement, according to a news release. The legislation was not passed out of the Environmental Matters Committee prior to the end of the legislative session. Del.
