A poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press reports that state and local government fare well as public opinion of federal government declines.
How do you feel about Carroll County Government? Chances are that if you like a majority of those surveyed by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press then your answer is "pretty good." A poll released last month found that 63 percent of those surveyed looked favorably on their local governments. That percentage is roughly unchanged from last year when the group conducted a similar survey. State governments are enjoying similar public approval with 57 percent of those surveyed saying they look favorably upon their state governments—a five-point increase over last year. Meanwhile, public opinion of the federal government decreased by five points to 28 percent—the lowest point ever in a Pew poll, according to the center. The …

The Board of County Commissioners voted 4-1 to give the Board of Education $650,000 to complete security projects.
The Board of County Commissioners has voted to give the Board of Education (BOE) additional funding to accelerate existing school access security projects. In an email to parents earlier this week, School Superintendent Stephen Guthrie said that the school system has been adding controlled entry access to county schools over the past several years. Following the school schooting in Connecticut last week, the Board of Education asked the commissioners for additional funding to accelerate these projects in order to complete controlled entry point projects at all schools more quickly. According to a county government news release, the board of education requested $300,000 to complete projects in the schools deemed to have the highest need for…

Residents speak their mind on a controversial ordinance in Carroll County.
At a public hearing to discuss an ordinance to make English the official language of Carroll County government, order was maintained but tensions ran high as speakers both applauded and demonized the Board of Commissioners for its proposal. “Everyone in this room has been inoculated against polio by law,” said Mike Stewart, “I didn’t like it then, but it was a proactive move. We didn’t have to wait to see what would happen.” Stewart said that other states spent tens of millions on translations and printing ballots in other languages. “I can’t really control what happens in California or DC, but I can start things here in my backyard …Just because we don’t have a problem now doesn’t mean we need to wait around for one. We need to be …

BGE's smart meters will allow for two-way communications between your home and BGE.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) recently considered Baltimore Gas and Electrics’ (BGE) request to begin installing smart meters in its customers’ homes. According to BGE's website, smart meters are advanced meters that identify energy consumption in more detail than a conventional meter. They look much like the electric meters that are in your home now, but their technology is far more advanced. They have the ability to communicate information via a secured network back and forth between your home and BGE. Beginning in spring 2012, BGE will install state-of-the-art digital electric meters and upgrade gas meters in every home and small business in its service area, a process that will take about three years, according to the BGE …
