Two local men have received suspicious phone calls.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a series of suspicious telephone calls made to County residents. A Hampstead man and a Mount Airy man both reported receiving a call in which the male caller claimed to have been involved in a motor vehicle accident with a member of their immediate family, with the caller citing the correct name of the family member, police said. The caller then claims that he’s holding the family member captive until damages, in the range of several hundred to several thousand dollars, are paid, according to police reports. One suspect has turned himself in, police continue searching for the second suspect.
The Sheriff's Office reports that on April 24 Tyler Theodore Rose, a suspect in a Taylorsville burglary, turned himself in. Police continue to search for the second suspect, Joshua Mathew Purvin. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office will partner with the U.S. Department of Justice's Drug Enforcement Administration on April 27 for the sixth national prescription drug take-back initiative, according to a Sheriff's news release. An extension of the county’s Medication Waste Disposal Program, the national initiative helps residents with the safe disposal of potentially dangerous controlled substances or other unused and expired pharmaceuticals. Police said the 19-year-old woman made the bomb threat on behalf of an acquaintance who was scheduled to appear in court.
A Pennsylvania woman faces charges of calling in a bomb threat on Tuesday that closed Carroll County Circuit and District Courts, and halted traffic in the area for five hours, according to the county Sheriff's Department. Police said that Kaylissa Lashel Kelly, 19, of Littlestown, PA, made the call on behalf of an acquaintance who was scheduled for a court appearance Tuesday morning. Kelly is charged with making false statement of destructive device, threat of arson, reckless endangerment, telephone misuse and obstruction of justice. Kelly was arrested at her home in Littlestown on Friday and is being held at the Adam’s County, PA Detention Center awaiting extradition to Maryland for the bomb threat charges and for failing to appear in …

According to a Sheriff's Department news release, just after 11 a.m. school officials reported finding an anonymous, non-specific written threat to the school building. They said a student found the threatening note, a release said. The school was evacuated while officers from several area law enforcement agencies inspected the building with explosive detection canine teams. A 47-year-old man is wanted by the Sheriff's Department for the robbery.
John Virgil Hill, 47, formerly of Union Bridge, is wanted by the Carroll County Sheriff's Department for the robbery of the Peoples Bank in the 500 block of Old Westminster Pike Monday morning, according to a release. Hill, who is described as a six-foot-tall black male of medium build with short black hair and a mustache, entered the bank just after 9 a.m. wearing a white long sleeved Baltimore Orioles shirt displaying the number 37, according to police. He was also wearing a red baseball cap displaying a multi-colored NASCAR #24 logo. After entering the bank, police said Hill approached a teller and displayed a note demanding money while implying that he was armed. The teller gave him the cash, according to police. Police will be looking for impaired drivers in Hampstead Saturday night.
Law enforcement officers from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Maryland State Police, Westminster Police Department, Sykesville Police Department, Taneytown Police Department and Hampstead Police Department will work together to conduct a sobriety checkpoint on March 16 according to a news release. The checkpoint, which is designed to reduce the number of impaired and intoxicated drivers on Carroll County roadways, will occur in the north bound lane on the 2200 Block of Hanover Pike, in Hampstead. Grant funded through Checkpoint Strike Force, the checkpoint will be well marked and operated by uniformed law enforcement personnel. Two officers who worked to save a young woman from a burning vehicle in January were recognized by local officials.
On Jan. 11, 18-year-old Casey Marie Bellofatto's car crossed the double yellow line on Route 97 near Sykesville and hit another vehicle head-on before turning over and starting on fire. Cpl. Craig Ream, an 11-year veteran of the Howard County police department happened upon the scene on his way to work and crawled under the hood of the burning car to rescue Bellofatto. After pulling the woman from the burning car, Ream and Carroll County Sheriff's Deputy Cpl. Gunnar Burdt carried her up a hill and away from the vehicle. Earlier this week the two officers were recognized by local officials for their courage and valor in saving the young woman's life. Prosecutors allege that Maj. Nicholas Plazio gave false information in a homicide case.
Maj. Nicholas Plazio of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office resigned Wednesday after the Office of the Maryland State Prosecutor charged him with misconduct in office. According to charging documents, Plazio willfully and knowingly gave false information to the Carroll County State's Attorney Office, and gave false testimony in court, in connection to cases against Russell Scott Laderer and Cassandra Glover. Laderer and Glover were implicated in the 2010 stabbing death of Jeremiah DeMario of Hampstead. In March, Carroll County State's Attorney Jerry Barnes dismissed charges against Laderer and Glover, saying in a statement that the Carroll County Sheriff's Department was to blame.
