Hoods Mill Landfill Scheduled to Close July 1

The Carroll County commissioners decided to close the Hoods Mill Landfill during the budgeting session.

Carroll County commissioners debated options for the Hoods Mill Landfill in open session on Tuesday before deciding to stick with the plan to close the landfill, located in Woodbine, on July 1 of this year. During the budget process, the board decided to close the landfill because a $250,000 investment was required to continue operations. The $250,000 is for a new roof and a new front loader. Hoods Mill costs approximately $46,000 a year to operate, according to Department of Public Works deputy director Jeff Topper. Commissioner Richard Rothschild argued for the board to explore ways to keep the landfill open. Rothschild said he is concerned that the board doesn’t know the impact this closure would have on the Northern Landfill and the …

Carroll County Commissioners Approve Proposed Budget in 3-2 Vote

Two commissioners objected to recurring costs that may not be covered by future revenue.

Although several citizens urged the Carroll County Board of Commissioners to make further cuts in the county budget, the board voted 3-2 to approve the budget in a regularly scheduled open meeting Tuesday. The budget includes a one-cent property tax decrease and education funding at $164 million. The commissioners introduced the budget in late April and have held five public hearings around the county. Commissioners Richard Rothschild and Robin Bartlett-Frazier maintained their positions against the budget, contending that the budget includes recurring costs for future years when it is unlikely that revenues will increase. "I do not believe this budget is conservative by any definition of the term, and I will not vote for it," Rothschild …

The board voted to accept the proposed budget that is being presented to citizens in the coming weeks. Commissioners Robin Frazier and Richard Rothschild voted against it. Ted Zaleski, director of management and budgets, presented the plan, pointing out significant changes from last year's projected budget and explaining the thinking behind some decisions.  Upon the completion of Zaleski's presentation, commissioners Rothschild and Frazier presented what they called the "minority report." Carroll Commissioners Respond to Senate Passage of Same-Sex Marriage Bill

Commissioner Shoemaker is “looking forward” to signing a petition against the measure.

The Maryland State Senate passed same-sex marriage, 25-22, Thursday night, less than a week after the House of Delegates passed the identical bill. Gov. Martin O'Malley supports same-sex marriage legislation and is expected to sign the bill. Carroll County government officials were vocal in opposing the bill, with Commissioner Haven Shoemaker (R-District 2) already planning for the next step.  "I'm looking forward to signing a petition to put this to referendum," Shoemaker said.  Earlier this month, Carroll County Commissioner Robin Frazier (R-District 1) announced the board’s proclamation designating Feb. 7-14 as “marriage week” and recognizing marriage as an institution that “binds men and women together in a network of mutual aid and …

Your beliefs about God are NOT the views and beliefs of all the constituents that you serve. There are many churches and synagogues that will perform …   more ›
