Liberty Tops Century in Baseball, Softball, and Tennis

The Lions won on the diamond and the court on Wednesday.

The Liberty Lions shut out the Knights in baseball and softball while the boys and girls tennis teams both won 4-1 over Century Wednesday in spring break match-ups in Carroll County.  Mackenzie Thompson hurled the Lions to a 7-0 win in softball. She struck out six, walked two and allowed four hits. "She has been getting stronger as the games go on it seems like. Today was probably her best game overall," Liberty coach Chris Szocik said about Thompson. Andrew Massey mastered Century with a one-hitter enroute to a 9-0 win. He had a no-hitter through six innings, before Michael Austin stroked a single in the seventh. Massey struck out 11 in picking up the win. Liberty banged out 11 hits in the softball game scoring single runs in the second …

Rivals Meet in Liberty Road Challenge

Liberty wins girls meet and Century takes the boys contest.

Century, Liberty and South Carroll met for the annual Liberty Road Challenge Wednesday. The Lions took the girls meet and the Knights captured the boys meet on their home track. Last year's meet was stopped after a few events due to snow and rain. Liberty compiled 75 points in the girls meet with Century second with 67 followed by South Carroll with 44. Century racked up 90 points in the boys meet and Liberty had 68 and South Carroll 28. Julian Woods led Century as he captured three events. He was first in the high jump, triple jump and 300 meter hurdles. Teammate Dan Blair won the shot put and discus. For more information, go to carrollcountyrunning.com/results.

Local teams face off this week.

The county schedule gets into full swing this week. One of the big events this week is a tri-track meet at Century involving Liberty, South Carroll and the host Knights on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, South Carroll and Century meet in baseball, softball and tennis. On Tuesday, Liberty and Century match up in boys and girls lacrosse. Extreme Fun & Fit Bootcamp Comes to Eldersburg

The newest bootcamp to hit the area brings a mixture of bodyweight exercises and drills to lose fat and build muscle.

A new fitness program in Eldersburg is looking to bring fun and fitness together in a hardcore workout program.  Extreme Fun & Fit Bootcamp, owned and operated by Mac Cassity, is housed in the JACT Sports Complex at 1332 Londontown Blvd. in Eldersburg. The program is a monthly membership based bootcamp offered between 5:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday through Friday.  The workouts are a mixture of bodyweight exercises combined with some fitness band and medicine ball drills designed to lose fat and build muscle.  "Nothing beats a killer group workout," said Extreme Fun & Fit owner Mac Cassity. The winter sports season came to an end over the weekend. The Century girls were second in Class 2A basketball while the South Carroll boys lost in the semifinals. The spring season gets underway on March 21. High School Basketball: Century Girls Top Owings Mills, Move Onto State Finals

The Knights will play Calvert High School in the state finals Saturday at 1 p.m.

Century High School pulled away from Owings Mills during Friday's Class 2A state semifinals, handily defeating the Eagles 47-20 at UMBC’s RAC Arena. The Knights move on to play Calvert High School in the state finals Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m.  Owings Mills (13-12) committed 27 turnovers and shot just 8 of 37 (22 percent) from the field. “To Century’s credit, they came out with a great game plan,” Eagles head coach Donchez Graham said. “They are a really sound defensive team and they got after us. They got some layups and some timely shooting and got out to that early advantage.” Although they trailed by only six points coming out of the first quarter, the Eagles quickly saw the game get away from them in frame number two. South Carroll Graduate Takes Over McDaniel Women's Soccer Team

Sandra Lagana grew up in Sykesville and was recently named the McDaniel women's soccer team coach.

McDaniel College Athletics Director Paul Moyer announced the selection of Sandra Lagana from Sykesville as the new women's soccer coach for the Green Terror, according to a news release on the McDaniel Athletics website. Lagana grew up in Sykesville and graduated as Class Valedictorian from South Carroll High School in 2000. She then went on to play soccer and lacrosse at Bridgewater College in Virginia, graduating in 2004 with a degree in communication studies.  Lagana served as the head women's soccer at Ferrum College since 2007, spending the last five seasons building the Panthers program into a playoff contender in the USA South Athletic Conference, according to the release.  Lagana starts as head coach on March 19, with McDaniel …

High School Basketball: South Carroll Stops Century for Regional Title

The Cavalier boys return to Comcast Center for the state semifinals.

South Carroll High School, the top seed in Class 2A West regional, stopped rival Century High School for the third time this year, 53-45 for the right to advance to the state semifinals at the Comcast Center at the University of Maryland Friday night at 9 p.m. "It’s tough," South Carroll coach Doug Goff said about playing a team for the third time. "I expected this type of drawn out game the first two times we played them. We just got fortunate and got a little lead earlier in the game and stretched it out." The South Carroll gym was packed, with some fans forced to sit on the stage. Students for both schools stood and cheered on the schools during the contest.
