State Fire Marshal, Sheriff Investigate Pipe Bomb in Mailbox

A trip to the mailbox ended with a call to the bomb squad for a Taneytown man Wednesday.

A joint investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal Bomb Squad and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office is currently underway to determine who placed a pipe bomb inside a mailbox in Taneytown Wednesday, according to a release from the Fire Marshal.  The owner of the property in the 3800 block of McMullen Rd., James A. Sandel, found the device at about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday when checking his mail, the Fire Marshal said. Deciding the device was a threat, sheriff's deputies notified the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Bomb technicians rendered the device safe at the scene without injury or property damage, according to the Fire Marshal. Report: Carroll County Teen Charged for Making Multiple False 911 Calls

The juvenile made four 911 calls with false information about fires and car accidents.

Deputy State Fire Marshals have charged a 14-year-old male juvenile with making multiple false alarm calls to 911, according to a news release. Investigators determined the youth made four false alarm calls with claims of two shed fires and two vehicle crashes in the Finksburg area, according to the release. All four calls were made between Jan. 4 and Feb. 11. The fire marshal said no motive for the calls has been established. The juvenile has been charged with four counts of false alarm, four counts of misuse of a telephone and four counts of making false statements to a public official. If convicted, he faces penalties of up to 34 years imprisonment and/or $24,000 in fines, according to the fire marshal. He has been released to the …

State Officials: 2012 Fire Deaths Hit Record Low

The previous record low in Maryland was set in 2006 and tied in 2008.

Fire deaths throughout Maryland in 2012 dropped nearly a quarter from the previous year to a new record low, state officials said Thursday. According to preliminary data announced by the state fire marshal's office, 52 people died in 2012 of "injuries related to hostile fires." That total is 22 percent down from the 67 fire-related deaths recorded in 2011, and 13 percent down from the 60 deaths reported in 2006 and again in 2008, which were then record lows. In a release, State Fire Marshal William E. Barnard attributed the drop in deaths to safety precautions, including working smoke alarms, home fire escape plans, residential fire sprinklers and "outreach programs that emphasize personal responsibility for surviving a home fire."  “I …
