Maryland Schools Top Nation in Advanced Placement Tests Ranking

Less than 20 percent of Carroll County high school students took an AP exam in 2012.

Maryland students have once again secured a number one ranking—this time in the number of students scoring a 3 or higher out of five on an Advanced Placement test. The state moved up from 27.9 percent in 2011 to 29.6 percent in 2012, the highest percentage in the nation, according to a report released by the College Board Wednesday. A total of 48.2 percent of Maryland students took the exam in 2012, up from 46.4 the previous year. In comparison, 19.5 percent of Carroll County high school students took an AP Exam in 2012 with 64.7 percent of the exams earning a score of 3 or better, which is down slightly from 66.1 percent in 2011 according to the CCPS website. High School Sports Standings: Regional Basketball Kicks Off This Week

Century hosts rival Liberty this week.

The basketball regional play runs this week, while the wrestlers head to College Park on Friday and Saturday for the state meet. Century High School hosts rival Liberty High School tonight in girls action of Class 2A West region. South Carroll High School heads to Catoctin last this evening. On Tuesday, Century and South Carroll host games in the boys Class 2A West region. The Knights face off against Frederick County’s Walkersville while the Cavaliers tip off against county foe Winters Mill. The winners advance in the region while the season is over for the losers. Carroll County Winter Sports Standings: Feb. 20

State track and regional basketball games and wrestling matches take place this week.

Winter high school sports have reached the second season - state playoffs. The state indoor track meet takes place today in Prince George’s County at the sports complex. Basketball and wrestling have regional playoffs start this week. Century, Liberty and South Carroll mat squads head to Mountain Ridge High School Friday and Saturday for the Class 1A/2A regional meet. Century grabbed the top spot in the Class 2A West girls region. The Knights have a bye and will play the winner of Liberty and Francis Scott Key on Feb. 27. The Lions are the eighth seed in the region and the Eagles are the ninth. South Carroll jumps into action on Friday as they host Winters Mill. The Cavaliers are seeded sixth and the Falcons are 11th. In the boys region, …

High School Basketball: Cavaliers and Knights Split Doubleheader

South Carroll wins boys game while Century topped the girls contest.

South Carroll and Century met for a boys/girls doubleheader Friday with all four teams tied for first place in the county. When the evening was over, two of the teams were in first. The girls took the court first and Century edged the Cavaliers 40-37. The second game saw South Carroll come out on top 52-30. The Century girls improve to 6-1 in the county and 10-1 overall. South Carroll is now 5-2 and 8-4 overall. On the boys side, South Carroll is 7-0 in the county and 12-2 overall. The loss was the first one for the season for Century, who are 6-1 in the county and 10-1 overall. Neither side could pull away in the girls game. High School Sports: Annual Tri-Wrestling Meet Ends in Three Way Tie

Century, Liberty and South Carroll each won a match during Tuesday's tournament.

The battle of Route 26 was a draw as Century, Liberty and South Carroll each won a match in a tri-wrestling meet Tuesday evening. Each of the matches was decided in the final weight class. Liberty and Century started the evening with the Knights coming out on top 38-30. The Lions surprised the Cavaliers 34-33 on a pin by Brandon Haugh. In the final match, South Carroll knocked off Century, 39-35. Haugh was down 7-3 before he pinned Tarvis Connelly in 3:05. It was the first official match win of the season for Haugh. "He collected one forfeit earlier in the season. He stayed out there and worked hard and I couldn’t be happier for the kid to come through for us there," said Liberty High School coach Mike Flemming.
