Maryland Reacts to Sandy Hook School Shooting

Counties across the state took measures to deal with the Newtown, CT school shooting.

Communities across Maryland have been reeling in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Some residents said they feared dropping their children off at school while others demanded action from legislators. Hyattsville Elementary School's new principal, Julia Burton, addressed her students Monday before Prince George's County schools observed a minute of silence to honor the victims of Friday's school shooting in Newtown, CT. "Take care of yourself. Take care of each other. And take care of the place," she told students. In Wheaton, parents reacted to the tragic news and talked about school safety in Montgomery County. Frances Frost, a contributor to the Local Voices section on Wheaton Patch, wrote in an email: "As a mom of 4…

Redistricting Plan Said To ‘Disenfranchise’ Eldersburg

Del. Susan Krebs is fighting the proposed legislative redistricting plan, which moves a majority of Eldersburg and Sykesville to Howard County.

Gov. Martin O’Malley presented his proposed map this week to the president of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Delegates, setting forth the boundaries of the legislative districts for electing members of the Senate and the House of Delegates.  But the map, according to Del. Susan Krebs, R-District 9, puts Carroll County at a disadvantage. The proposed map cuts the number of resident delegates from four down to three, a number that is unrealistic based on the population, according to Krebs.  “The Governor’s Redistricting Advisory Committee proposal for legislative redistricting will disenfranchise roughly a quarter of Carroll County voters who will no longer have a delegate that resides in their community,” said Krebs. The …

I agree wholeheartly with you Bonnie. The Caroll County Legislative Delegation goes down to Annapolis does what in dancing is called soft shoe , then comes back and blast the Governor every chance they get. We had Democratic candidates like Riley & Walsh who could have kept the boundry lines the same and legislative power back to Carroll County if they were elected . So what did Carroll do is …   more ›

Could a Bag Tax Go Statewide in Maryland?

Carroll County Commissioner Haven Shoemaker says not in Carroll County.

Prince George’s and Howard counties are among the jurisdictions statewide that are exploring following in Montgomery County's footsteps and imposing a tax on plastic bags used at retail establishments. However, Baltimore County is one region that does not appear to be going along. In Maryland, most counties need state legislative approval to pass a tax; Baltimore city and county, and Montgomery County are the only jurisdictions that don't need legislative approval, according to the Baltimore Sun. Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamentez has “no interest in pursuing a bag tax,” said county spokeswoman Ellen Kobler. Carroll County commissioners also said the bag tax wouldn’t come to fruition in their area. “Any new tax or tax hike is wrong …

Visited a store in Montgomery county where they wanted to charge for plastic bags. Fine so I said paper is fine. Guess what, they don't have paper bags. That is when I walked out of the store.   more ›
