The family of a McDaniel alumnus from more than 120 years ago has given the largest bequest for scholarships in the school’s history. The approximately $6.7 million came from the family of 1891 alumnus Philip Henry Dorsey of St. Clements Bay. (St. Mary’s County), McDaniel said. “McDaniel has received a check for more than $975,000 as the first installment of the gift with much of the estate coming in the form of property,” officials said in a release. Dorsey was one of 18 students to earn a bachelor’s degree from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel) in 1891, the school said in a release. A college official says "no cause for panic."
McDaniel College is extending the hours of its wellness center in response to a stomach condition that is impacting the campus. Director of Media Relations for McDaniel College, Cheryl Knauer confirmed that in a 48-hour period, 40 students were showing symptoms of gastroenteritis. Knauer said some students have gone to the emergency room at Carroll Hospital Center but she is unsure how many. Some students have suggested that the stomach illness is a result of food poisoning from the campus dining hall, according to The McDaniel Free Press, the school's student-run news publication. Stephen Corrieri has been named McDaniel College's head men's soccer coach. "As we conducted this search, Stephen stood out to us as someone with an excellent soccer background," McDaniel Director of Athletics Paul Moyer said. "He has been a part of programs that have had a great deal of success and we are confident he can do the same thing with our team." Corrieri has spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach at York (Pa.). During his tenure on staff, the Spartans have been consistently ranked among the top teams in Division III. Scientists expected the asteroid to come very close to the Earth - about 17,200 miles away, or only 1/13th the distance to the moon.
This afternoon, an asteroid was expected to pass Earth within the moon's orbit, flying lower than communications, weather and GPS satellites high above the planet, according to Space.com. While it was the nearest to Earth an object of its size has ever passed, asteroid 2012 DA 14 would barely be visible from Maryland, even with a telescope, said McDaniel College Physicist Jeff Marx. According to Marx, the meteor that hit Russia early this morning injuring more than 500 people, was not related to 2012 DA 14, which scientists have been tracking for a year. The fundraiser will raise money for a a local boy who needs an assistance dog.
The Harlem Wizards will be coming to Westminster on Feb. 2 to dribble, shoot and dunk their way past a team of local players -- all to raise money for an assistance dog for a local boy. Wendy Boag said she invited the Harlem Wizards to come play a game at McDaniel College as a way to raise money for her son's assistance dog. "They are like the 'Harlem Globetrotters,' but on more of a community-type scale," Boag said. "They do all of the same types of tricks as the Globe Trotters, but are more interactive with the kids in the audience, like inviting them all onto the court for half time fun." Although Stephanie Madsen’s first-year seminar students aren’t that many years away from their own childhoods, most of them didn’t realize how their games, sports and imaginary friends factored into making them who they are today. Now, a week from semester’s end in the “Power of Play” first-year seminar, these students have new views on the princess culture, recreational sports, imaginary friends, gunplay and some cutting-edge research in nature-deficit disorder, which affects children who spend too much time playing video games and too little time outdoors. A McDaniel College Alum is making it big as a professional drummer.
Adam Silverman ’03 is a professional drummer, a Christian-rock artist and rising star in Nashville’s country music scene. He recently landed a gig touring with American Idol runner-up Lauren Alaina. In the past year, he appeared on Good Morning America and The Ellen Degeneres Show, among others. Between performances, he operates a website development business and spends time with Nicki, his wife of six years, and their two cats.
