After President Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney sparred aggressively last week, the candidates dug into foreign policy at Monday night's third and final presidential debate. News organizations cited instant polls that showed voters believed both candidates did well in a face-off that was less contentious than past debates this season but offered up a few verbal highlights. The two candidates had extensive exchanges on Iran and Syria, and the importance of the U.S.-Israel alliance. Obama responded to a charge by Romney that the Navy had fewer ships than it did in 1916. “We also have fewer horses and bayonets,” said Obama. Whom do you think won the debate? More than 20 years after its last major revision, it’s time for a complete review of the Open Meetings Act and its effectiveness at keeping the public’s business public.
Note: The following commentary appeared on Marylandreporter.com on Oct. 16, 2012 and is used with permission here. The Capital Debt Affordability Committee held a meeting without public notice several weeks ago to look at a proposal for $750 million in new debt, and then scheduled a follow-up meeting, again with no required public notice. I wrote a story about the meetings, and noted the failure of the debt committee to comply with the Open Meetings Act, but I did not file a complaint with the compliance board that enforces the act. After the story came out, an anonymous reader named Shelly called, and asked why I had not filed a complaint with the board. Both President Obama and GOP challenger Mitt Romney were seen as forceful in their second presidential debate Tuesday night — an in-your-face showdown in a town hall format at Hofstra University in New York. Often interrupting one another and the moderator, the two candidates sparred over issues including energy, immigrant and women's rights, and foreign policy. At one point, Romney told Obama, "You'll get your chance in a moment. I'm still speaking." Moderator Candy Crowley of CNN told Romney in one exchange to "sit down" and let Obama finish his statement. Comptroller says Maryland "is the poster child for gerrymandering" and urges voters to vote no on Question 5.
Democratic Comptroller Peter Franchot said Monday he supports his party's candidates but that recent redistricting of Maryland's congressional is too heavy-handed. "This map is way over the edge in terms of bare-knuckle politics," said Franchot. "I'm a proud Democrat. I support Democrats. I just want it to be fair and not fixed," Franchot said, comparing the redistricting process to "Boss Tweed-style Chicago politics." Franchot Tuesday called for an independent, non-partisan commission that would redraw the congressional and state legislative districts. Brandon Davis decided he could do without some of his musical equipment. What he couldn't do without: experiencing an Orioles playoff game. So the Anne Arundel County native—a 2002 South River High School grad—hocked some of his personal items from his Miami residence in order to catch a flight and land a ticket to see the Orioles play in Game 2 of the American League Division Series Monday in Baltimore. Davis, 29, and his mother, Edye Stewart, sat about 10 rows off the field along the right field line as the Orioles defeated the Yankees, 3-2. See the video for more from Stewart and Davis.
