If you take the time to bling out your home for the holidays--hang lights, arrange lawn decorations, illuminate the Santa on the roof--you should show it off to all of Carroll County! You can do that, and enter to win Patch's contest, by just uploading a photo. We’re launching our annual Deck the House Contest to find the most over-the-top holiday decorations in America—the best “decked” out house in the country—the one home so spectacularly decorated that everyone in town jokes your holiday decorations could rival Rockefeller Center’s. If this sounds like your house, upload a photo or video of your home to our contest page between now and Dec. 16 by clicking here. Only residents of Patch towns are eligible to enter. We’ll select 24 …

Ashley Playford dressed up as a pirate carrying a mermaid this Halloween. Well, actually, she dressed up as the mermaid. Well...Her creativity has earned her the title of Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America and a $5,000 grand prize. It was Palyford's use of an optical illusion that won us over. Take a look at the photo she entered on Peekskill-Cortlandt Patch! Almost 4,000 Patch users entered the contest from Oct. 15 to Nov. 5, with costumes ranging from the Eiffel Tower and Honey Boo Boo to a flower pot and a clever interpretation of "binders full of women." National judges chose 1 finalist from each Patch state based on who had the most creative and innovative costume (we combined North Carolina & South Carolina for this contest…

Poets write about them. Strong men cry in their presence. We honor them each year with a special day punctuated by hearts and flowers, and perhaps even breakfast in bed. Don't just settle for all the customary ways to celebrate how awesome your mom is. Instead, upload a photograph of her to this article and write a caption telling us what's so great about the moms of Carroll County. Next Friday, May 11, at noon, we'll randomly pick a winner and call her the "Best Mom of Carroll County." Now that's a gift. But if that's not enough, we'll also award you a $50 gift certificate to spend any way you want on mom. Contest rules are attached. Patch will also compile photos of moms from across the state for a "Moms of Maryland" photo gallery. …

An Ellicott City-based group that minds the Patapsco River watershed wins $500 from Patch.
Patch on Monday announced Patapsco Heritage Greenway as the winner of a $500 donation. The group — which was named "Friends of the Patapsco Valley and Heritage Greenway" until an official name change earlier this month — was nominated by readers among more than 50 environmental nonprofits and was chosen in a random drawing of 147 comments. More than 15 commenters praised the organization, which will receive $500 from Patch to further its cause. "Thank you so much!!!" wrote John Slater, president of the organization, in an email upon learning of the prize. "We can really use the money!" Support for the group on Patch was strong. "Friends of Patapsco Heritage Greenway is one of the most determined and dedicated organizations around!," one …

Any organization that's trying to green up our world can take home a bit of green for itself.
Patch is running a contest over the next week in which readers nominate an environmental nonprofit and the winning organization will receive a $500 donation to an environmental charity. Your role is simple: leave a comment below, nominating an organization you want to see receive the money. Then, on April 30, we'll pick a comment at random and the organization gets a check. There is one shot per commenter but other commenters who support the group are welcome — so the more comments an organization receives, the better chance it has at winning. If you know of a worthy nonprofit, have it mobilize its supporters to leave comments. One of Patch's founding principles was that people are interested in helping their communities through …
