Exploring Issues in Eldersburg: Carrolltown Mall

What do you think should happen next at Carrolltown Mall?

With the closings of Blockbuster and Peebles leaving two more vacant storefronts in the Carrolltown Center, the question becomes what's next for the former mall? Now anchored by Big Lots and Kmart, the shopping center has become a less popular place to shop for some, while others prefer the shops located there.  "I thought for sure this would go," said Jenny Lai on Facebook about the Eldersburg Kmart. "I've only been in there twice and there is never anyone there!" "I like that Kmart better than the Walmart," said Patti Meyer on Facebook. "Seems like Walmart has changed their products and I can't find what I need. I'll be sorry to see it go." As residents of the community, what do you think should be the next step? What should move in and …

The most populated area in Carroll County and we must deal with eye sores and poor planning. It's time for Eldersburg to incorporate, stop letting Westminster decide our fate. It's time for Carroll County to move to a Charter Government and stop letting Annapolis decide the County's fate.   more ›

What You're Saying About the Carrolltown Mall Closings

Peebles and Blockbuster will both be closing in the next two months.

The announcement of recent closings at the Carrolltown Mall met with a variety of responses from readers.  The closings of Blockbuster and Peebles in addition to the unknown future of Kmart left many hopeful that the changes would bring revitalization to the shopping center.  Here's a sampling of what people said on Facebook and in the comments section on Patch. You're welcome to add your own thoughts below. Amy McGovern: "That 'Mall' has been dying a slow death for the past 11 years. Despite Rumors, Eldersburg Big Lots Not Closing Down

The store will not be following in the footsteps of neighboring Peebles and Blockbuster.

Despite rumors of closing in the near future, Big Lots located in the Carrolltown Mall will not be shutting down anytime soon.  “We are not going anywhere right now,” said a store manager Thursday, adding that the store still has about two years left on their lease. Big Lots has two locations in the county with a store in Westminster as well. The talk of other stores possibly closing comes after the announcement of neighboring stores Peebles and Blockbuster closing early next year. Peebles will close on Jan. 21, while Blockbuster plans on shutting down on Feb. 19.

Eldersburg Peebles to Close Its Doors in January

The department store has a long history in its space at the Carrolltown Mall.

Peebles, the local department store located in the Carrolltown Mall in Eldersburg is closing its doors. The 29,881 square foot longtime anchor at a shopping center will officially close on Jan. 21, according to store manager Robin Eppig. It’s classified as a “dead mall,” according to Deadmalls.com, a non-profit site that promotes the history of the malls across the United States and the future of the center remains unknown. The mall turned shopping center still contains a few active businesses, including Kmart, Big Lots, Freedom Fitness and Andies Candies.  But vacant locations are also common with parts of the architecture including remnants of left-behind buildings, like the awning above a former fitness complex. The property is managed …
