A fire broke out at Fairhaven Retirement Community in Sykesville Friday evening after an 81-year-old resident attempted to adjust his own oxygen machine, according to the Deputy State Fire Marshal. According to a Fire Marshal report, firefighters from Sykesville Volunteer Fire Department were called just before 7 p.m. to the three story assisted living facility. Upon arrival, the firefighters discovered a fire had been extinguished by two sprinklers in room 217 and one sprinkler head located just outside the room. According to a Fire Marshal report, investigators concluded Millard Keller, 81, was attempting to shorten the oxygen tubing that assisted him to breath by cutting the tubing and then with a metal awl and a cigarette lighter …

It is illegal, and dangerous, to burn certain waste materials through Sept. 1.
Maryland's Open Burning Ban is in effect annually between June 1 and Sept. 1 according to the Sykesville Fire Department. As in past years, a seasonal open burning ban will is imposed in: Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George's counties and Baltimore City. The ban includes the open burning that is primarily used as a form of disposal of certain waste materials by individuals, farmers, and developers. The ban does not affect backyard barbecue grilling or open fires for recreational purposes, such as campfires. Public officers may authorize certain other types of fires.

Fire officials believe an exterior electrical unit caught fire and ignited the Sykesville home's attic.
An electrical fire caused more than $200,000 in damages to a Sykesville home early Tuesday, and the way it started helped save the lives of the three people inside, said Bill Rehkopf, public information officer for the Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department. The incident was reported at a home in the 7600 block of Maple Ave. at 2:04 a.m., he said. The fire was through the roof when responders arrived, and units from Sykesville, Gamber, Winfield and Howard County controlled it by 2:33 a.m., he said. Two adults and an adolescent girl escaped from the home safely after an exterior electrical connection caught fire and traveled through the gutter and into the home's attic, Rehkopf said.
