A Westminster couple was charged today with four burglaries in Westminster and Hampstead between June and November, police said. Carroll County Sheriff's detectives served charges on William Scottie Bircher II, 25, and Shannon Lee, 26, both of Westminster, Friday morning for burglary and theft, according to police reports. Between June and November, the Carroll County Sheriff's Office responded to four burglaries in the northern Westminster and Hampstead area where police say the suspects forced their way into homes and removed jewelry, coins, firearms and other small miscellaneous items for an estimated $58,000 value. The Marriottsville man is being held at the Carroll County Detention Center on charges including auto theft, theft and driving under the influence of alcohol, according to police.
Police said they captured a Marriottsville man Friday morning who is accused of stealing a vehicle and $6,000 worth of hunting rifles and equipment in Eldersburg. Allen James Harmer, 21, of Marriottsville, was arrested and charged early Friday morning by Sheriff’s Deputies in the theft of a Toyota RAV 4 and approximately $6,000 of hunting rifles and other hunting equipment taken from unlocked vehicles parked at the condominium complex along Rudy-Serra Drive, police said. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information about two suspects who purchased more than $400 worth of gift cards and other merchandise at three Eldersburg businesses using a debit card belonging to a Sykesville man, according to police reports. The victim left his ATM card in a local ATM machine after a transaction on Sept. 8, police said. It is believed the suspects recovered the card from the machine and made six purchases over the next three days before the victim discovered the card missing and closed the account, police said. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a Latino female in her 30’s with short, dark brown hair (see attached police photos) who officials said attempted to cash stolen checks against the bank account of an Eldersburg woman. On June 7, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office began investigating the theft of a purse and other valuables taken from a vehicle parked at the Goddard School, 6300 Goddard Park Drive in Eldersburg, according to a sheriff's department news release. The wallet taken belonged to the Eldersburg woman, and contained several personal documents including personal checks, credit and ATM cards, police said. Is this a trend, a sign of the times or a coincidence?
A bank robbery, an assault with a baseball bat and the theft of copper from an abandoned physciatric facility are all crimes that occured in Eldersburg and Sykesville between Jan. 14 and Jan. 26 of this year. While these crimes could have occured anywhere, they in fact happened in the backyard of local residents. All but the bank robbery suspect were caught and charged according to their crimes, with the local Sykesville Police Department, the Carroll County Sheriff's Department and the Maryland State Police from the Westminster Barrack all working in the Eldersburg and Sykesville area to cut down on such crimes. While statistics show that the area has historically had a low crime rate, recent incidents may show a change in this trend…

The incident that recently occurred in Sykesville could be more common than you think.
Maryland State Police charged two men on Jan. 18 in the theft of copper, aluminum and steel from the former Henryton Center in Sykesville, a former psychiatric facility. While the incident that resulted in Mark Dewayne Walker, 46, of Rockville, and Billy Joe Chapman, 54, of Boyds, being charged with theft and related offenses may appear to be a local event, the material they were allegedly targeting is part of a broader crime trend. Surrounding areas have seen an increase in the theft of copper and items made out of copper. According to an article in the Washington Post, as of Jan. 21 there were three major thefts of copper in that region since Jan. 1. Maryland State Police said they have charged two men Wednesday afternoon in the theft of copper, aluminum and steel from the former Henryton Center in Sykesville, once a psychiatric facility. Mark Dewayne Walker, 46, of the 300 block of South Homers Lane in Rockville, and Billy Joe Chapman, 54, of the 21400 block of Clarksville Road in Boyds, were charged with felony theft, burglary and malicious destruction of property. On Monday, Nov. 21 at around 3 p.m., two African American males entered the Wal-Mart located at 280 Woodward Rd. Westminster, in an attempt to steal flat screen televisions according to a news release. Police said when the two men arrived at the store, they separated, both got flat screen televisions and attempted to leave the store without paying for them. The first suspect was detained by Wal-Mart staff and taken into custody by police. Police said that one man, Edwin Lamont Perkins, 49, of Hagerstown, was arrested and charged with Theft: Less $1,000, False Statement to an Officer, Attempted Theft Less $1,000, and Conspiracy to Commit Theft less $1,000. Carroll County Sheriff's Deputies have charged an Eldersburg man with stealing items from 16 cars in the communities of Brimfield, Hilltop and Clipper Hill early Friday morning, according to a press release.
