Newsweek Names Three Carroll Schools Among 'America's Best High Schools'

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday.

On mobile? You can see interactive map here. Newsweek has ranked Century, Liberty and South Carroll high schools among the top high schools in the country. In its rankings, South Carroll High School ranked 857, Liberty High School ranked 981 and Century High School ranked 1,410. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the United States, with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about Carroll County's ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. Our high schools receive high rankings because of the dedicated teachers and administrators. The programs they offer challenge students to excel and reach high academic success. It's too bad that our County Commissioners, specifically Ms. Frazier and Mr. Rothschild, don't value our public school education and continually choose to not fund at the level our schools need to continue to achieve high…   more ›

(Updated) 8 Carroll County High Schools Ranked Among Most Challenging in the Nation

The America’s Most Challenging High School rankings is published by the Washington Post.

Eight of Carroll County’s public high schools made the list of America’s Most Challenging High Schools, published annually by the Washington Post. A total of 123 Maryland high schools were on the national list that had a total of 1,933 high schools ranked Ranking were based on index scores that were calculated based on the number of college-level tests given at the school in 2012 divided by the number of graduates that year, the Post said. I guess there's two ways to look at this...it's always good to be recognized nationally, even if a dozen schools in Howard are more competitive than our most challenging HS (Liberty). However, it's exceptionally clear that if our best HS is only the 108th most challenging in the DC area, we indeed have a long way to go to be considered one of the top school systems in the region! South Carroll Robotics Team Places 2nd in State Championship

The RoboCavs narrowly missed qualifying for the national FTC Robotics Championship.

The South Carroll High School RoboCavs finished second out of the best 32 teams in the state at the FTC Robotics State Championship, held on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. According to a public schools news release, after sweeping the five qualifying matches to begin the tournament, the RoboCavs entered the semifinals in first place.  After easily winning their first two matches in a best of three semifinal round, the first year, "rookie" Cavaliers were the statistical, if not emotional, favorites for winning the state title.  After two hard fought matches, the Cavaliers ended their day in second place, losing only to a six-year veteran team of the competition, earning the Finalist award and narrowly missing an…

South Carroll's Horn Named Athletic Director of the Year

The Maryland State Athletic Director Association selects a representative from each of the 13 districts that comprise the organization to honor each year.

The Maryland State Athletic Directors Association (MSADA) named Jim Horn, Athletic Director at South Carroll High School, Athletic Director of the Year for District 1B. MSADA selects a representative from each of the 13 districts that comprise the organization to honor each year. The awards are presented to athletic administrators who have made a significant impact on the lives of students and used athletics to achieve progress in the social and cultural environment of the school and community, according to a news release.  The selected individuals are eligible for the next three years to be selected as the Maryland State Athletic Director of the Year. “Jim is a seasoned athletic director who is looked up to by his colleagues for his …

The girls from Century and the boys from South Carroll both compete tonight in state semi-final matches.

High School Basketball: South Carroll Stops Century for Regional Title

The Cavalier boys return to Comcast Center for the state semifinals.

South Carroll High School, the top seed in Class 2A West regional, stopped rival Century High School for the third time this year, 53-45 for the right to advance to the state semifinals at the Comcast Center at the University of Maryland Friday night at 9 p.m. "It’s tough," South Carroll coach Doug Goff said about playing a team for the third time. "I expected this type of drawn out game the first two times we played them. We just got fortunate and got a little lead earlier in the game and stretched it out." The South Carroll gym was packed, with some fans forced to sit on the stage. Students for both schools stood and cheered on the schools during the contest. Century hosts rival Liberty this week.

The basketball regional play runs this week, while the wrestlers head to College Park on Friday and Saturday for the state meet. Century High School hosts rival Liberty High School tonight in girls action of Class 2A West region. South Carroll High School heads to Catoctin last this evening. On Tuesday, Century and South Carroll host games in the boys Class 2A West region. The Knights face off against Frederick County’s Walkersville while the Cavaliers tip off against county foe Winters Mill. The winners advance in the region while the season is over for the losers. Volunteers Needed for Mock Student Interviews at South Carroll

The exercise will take place March 13 and 15.

South Carroll High School needs your help in preparing local students for the "real world."  The Sykesville high school is in need of volunteers to serve as mock interviewers on Tuesday, March 13, and/or Thursday, March 15, from 7:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. "Interviewers will have the opportunity to meet potential part-time employees or interns and to help students develop one of today’s most important life skills," according to a school press release. Carroll County Winter Sports Standings: Feb. 20

State track and regional basketball games and wrestling matches take place this week.

Winter high school sports have reached the second season - state playoffs. The state indoor track meet takes place today in Prince George’s County at the sports complex. Basketball and wrestling have regional playoffs start this week. Century, Liberty and South Carroll mat squads head to Mountain Ridge High School Friday and Saturday for the Class 1A/2A regional meet. Century grabbed the top spot in the Class 2A West girls region. The Knights have a bye and will play the winner of Liberty and Francis Scott Key on Feb. 27. The Lions are the eighth seed in the region and the Eagles are the ninth. South Carroll jumps into action on Friday as they host Winters Mill. The Cavaliers are seeded sixth and the Falcons are 11th. In the boys region, …

High School Basketball: Lions and Cavaliers Split Hoops Doubleheader

Liberty win girls contest and South Carroll takes boys.

Liberty and South Carroll girls and boys met for the second time this season, but the results were the same. The Lions won the girls contest 50-44 due to foul shooting in the final 46 seconds while South Carroll ran away in the boys game 71-42 as every Cavalier scored. The Liberty girls improved to 4-5 in the county and 5-10 overall with the victory. South Carroll fell to 6-3 in the county and 9-6 overall. The Cavalier boys remain undefeated in the county at 9-0 with the win and are 14-3 overall. Liberty is 2-7 in the county and 2-13 overall. Neither team could pull away in the girls game and South Carroll tied the score at 44 on a foul shot by Makeba Ndifang with 51 seconds remaining in the game.
