High School Basketball: Cavaliers and Knights Split Doubleheader

South Carroll wins boys game while Century topped the girls contest.

South Carroll and Century met for a boys/girls doubleheader Friday with all four teams tied for first place in the county. When the evening was over, two of the teams were in first. The girls took the court first and Century edged the Cavaliers 40-37. The second game saw South Carroll come out on top 52-30. The Century girls improve to 6-1 in the county and 10-1 overall. South Carroll is now 5-2 and 8-4 overall. On the boys side, South Carroll is 7-0 in the county and 12-2 overall. The loss was the first one for the season for Century, who are 6-1 in the county and 10-1 overall. Neither side could pull away in the girls game. High School Sports: Annual Tri-Wrestling Meet Ends in Three Way Tie

Century, Liberty and South Carroll each won a match during Tuesday's tournament.

The battle of Route 26 was a draw as Century, Liberty and South Carroll each won a match in a tri-wrestling meet Tuesday evening. Each of the matches was decided in the final weight class. Liberty and Century started the evening with the Knights coming out on top 38-30. The Lions surprised the Cavaliers 34-33 on a pin by Brandon Haugh. In the final match, South Carroll knocked off Century, 39-35. Haugh was down 7-3 before he pinned Tarvis Connelly in 3:05. It was the first official match win of the season for Haugh. "He collected one forfeit earlier in the season. He stayed out there and worked hard and I couldn’t be happier for the kid to come through for us there," said Liberty High School coach Mike Flemming. High School Basketball: Lions and Cavaliers Split Doubleheader

The Lions gain their first girl's basketball win of the season.

The Liberty Lion girls captured their first win of the season in front of a home crowd over South Carroll 60-58 in overtime. The girls were the first game of a doubleheader which saw South Carroll win the boys game 67-47. Between the games, Liberty honored former coach Steve Johnson. His family was on hand to receive a famed Liberty jersey and heard that new scoreboards next year in the gym will be in honor of him. Johnson was a graduate of South Carroll and coached the Lions for 10 years. He passed away in October. The girls basketball game went into overtime when Liberty’s Bianca Christian hit a basket with six seconds left in the fourth quarter. High School Boys Basketball: Cavaliers Soar Over Falcons

South Carroll boys win 66-49.

South Carroll behind junior Gavin McTavish pounded visiting Winters Mill 66-49 in boys basketball Tuesday evening. McTavish poured in 25 points to lead the Cavalier attack. Junior guard John Quinn was in double figures with 10 points. Teammates Tyler Alcid and Ryan Tate each had nine points each. Also scoring for victors was Dan Mullen with six, Ethan McBryde had four and Matthew Dee has two. South Carroll jumped out to a seven point lead 14-7 with 3:15 left in the first quarter. Winters Mill chipped away to take a 18-16 lead on a three-pointer by Joe Sands with 1:06 left. Liberty Honors Former Basketball Coach

Liberty High School is holding a benefit to honor its former basketball coach who passed away in October.

The big event on the schedule this week is a boys-girls doubleheader at Liberty Friday night as South Carroll travels to Eldersburg. The Lions plan to honor former boy's basketball coach Steve Johnson during the event. Johnson, who died in October has ties to both schools. He was the Lion's head coach since 2000 and graduated from South Carroll High School in 1979. Johnson started his coaching career as an assistant under Cavalier coach Jim Carnes. He spent 13 years with South Carroll before being named head coach at Liberty. The Lions compiled a 101-149 record under his guidance including being county co-champions in 2004. Liberty is wearing a patch on their jerseys with "SJ" on them this season. Coach Jay Seaborg took over the Liberty …

Girls Basketball: South Carroll Cavaliers Top Visiting Thomas Johnson

The South Carroll girls scored their second victory of the week.

South Carroll won their second game of the week against a Frederick County team as they downed Thomas Johnson 58-40. Earlier in the week the cavaliers defeated Linganore. South Carroll is 2-0 in the young season. Thomas Johnson will be glad the week is over as they dropped back-to-back games to Carroll County teams. They lost to Century on Wednesday. The Cavaliers had three players in double figures with Makaba Ndifang and Nicole Levy leading the way with 13 points each. Kristine Tennyson threw in 12 points. South Carroll jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game, but the visitors came back to tie the game at seven. Tennyson hit a bucket with 1:21 left in the first eight minutes to put the home team up 9-7 entering the second quarter. …

High School Basketball: Century Girls Open Hoop Season With Win

Century topped Frederick 51-49 Monday night.

Cassidy Jones and Jamie Clark hit free throws in the final 25 seconds to lead Century to a 51-49 victory over the defending Class 3A champion Frederick Cadets Monday evening. "We played tough. I thought some our foul shots down toward the end were really crucial, Jamie Clark and Cassidy," said Century coach Joel Beard.  In other girls action Monday evening South Carroll downed Linganore 55-39 and Oakdale defeated Liberty 54-44. In boys basketball, Century opened the season with a 71-41 win over Walkersville. Clark toed the foul line for two shots with 25 seconds remaining and the Cadets up 48-47. She hit both and 15 seconds later Jones went to the line for two more foul shoots. She sunk both to give the home Knights a 51-48 lead. Frederick…

Local High School Wrestlers Take to the Mat This Week With New Rule Changes

Century, Liberty and South Carroll start their seasons this week.

The biggest change for Century, Liberty and South Carroll on the mat this year is the weight classes. During the off season the National Federation of State High School Association made new weight classes for the 2011-12 season. The new classes are 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220 and heavyweight. Another change this year is the line for the circle on the mat is considered in bounds. Century Coach Dennis Frazier and the Knights open their season Tuesday against Urbana. Frazier is starting his fourth year as coach and last year led Century to a 23-7 record overall and 5-2 in the county. The Knights were second in the county tournament and third during the season. Boys High School Basketball Season Kicks Off This Week

Knights, Lions and Cavaliers open season their season Monday.

The high school boys basketball season gets underway this week with South Carroll looking to defend its county and regional title, while Liberty has a new coach. Century The Knights have three returning players this year looking to improve on last year’s 14-9 record. They were 11-3 in the county. Coach George Wunder is starting his 11th year at the helm of the Century squad. Returning are seniors Evan Fritsche and Mitch Sleight along with junior Chris Tan. The three are also the top returning scorers from last year. Fritsche is the top rebounded for Century. He averaged five per game last year. Sleight, Fritsche and Tan will be joined at the opening tip-off with Billy Dickman and Michael Austin. Wunder feels that South Carroll is once …
